"The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect" is the second single from The Rakes' second album Ten New Messages. It was released in the UK on July 16, 2007. The song was written for a Dior Homme fashion show in 2006 and was originally almost 18 minutes long. The album version is around 5 minutes long. The single release features live tracks recorded on Zane Lowe's BBC radio broadcast.

The song appears to be a reference to the eponymous protagonist of Martin Millar's novel, Lux the Poet, who wanders through a class riot in 80s Brixton in a haze of drugs and vanity.
