The Territorial Imperative: A Personal Inquiry Into the Animal Origins of Property and Nations, usually referred to by the title's first three words, is a 1966 nonfiction work by Robert Ardrey. He wrote about the natural tendency for people to be territorial, to need their personal space, their own home, their own "territory".[1] Ardrey dedicated his fourth book to Henry Eliot Howard, who was noted for being one of the first to describe in detail the territoriality behaviors in birds.
