The Tale of Little Pig Robinson is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and first published simultaneously in Britain by Frederick Warne & Co. and in America by David McKay Company in September 1930.[1] The tale is the story of the pig in Edward Lear's "The Owl and the Pussycat" and how he came to "the land where the Bong tree grows". Potter spent a holiday in Lyme Regis when she was seventeen, and used views of Lyme Regis, nearby Sidmouth, Ilfracombe, Hastings, and Teignmouth Harbour as backgrounds in the book. Though her last published book, it was one of the first written.[2]
Synopsis
Little Pig Robinson is sent by his aunts to the market to sell farm produce and buy things they need. On the way back Pig Robinson is tricked into sailing off in a ship called, the “Pound of Candles”. The ship's cook plans to turn Pig Robinson into a birthday dinner of roast pork with onions and apple sauce. The pig is frightened when he finds out his intended fate. With the help of a yellow cat Pig Robinson avoids the planned birthday dinner escaping in a rowing boat, then he rows his way to "the land where the Bong tree grows". Some time later Pig Robinson meets the The Owl and the Pussycat there.[3]
