The Square, Harlow

The Square is a 250 capacity independent live music venue in Harlow, Essex. It is managed by SquareOne Entertainment LLP who took over the venue in July 2008. Prior to this it had been run by Essex County Council, until funding was withdrawn and the venue was to be closed after over 35 years of service as a community resource. A group of local musicians formed SquareOne when the campaign to prevent the closure appeared to be getting nowhere and the only option was to 'make them an offer'. After nearly a year of negotiations, a deal done for the equipment and fittings and the lease was handed over on July 4th 2008. Independence day for the venue, which has managed to stay independent ever since.

The Square has hosts a diverse programme of music, comedy and other events that has seen many legendary acts like Coldplay, Dr Feelgood, Turin Brakes, The Wildhearts and Julian Cope grace the stage, alongside local heroes such as The Subways and Morning Parade as well as new, upcoming talent. Comedians Phill Jupitus, Eddie Izzard, Jo Brand, Terry Alderton and Omid Djalili amongst others, have appeared on the comedy nights and the monthly Acoustic Club provides a stage for the best of the unplugged. The Square opens to the public for live entertainment on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Details of the programme are available on the website.

The long-term future of the building is uncertain, as plans for redevelopment have often been mentioned.
