Production
On October 26, 2012, it was announced Paramount Pictures had acquired the film, and would begin production in April 2013.[4] On October 1, 2014, Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions signed a four picture deal with Netflix.[5] On October 7, 2014, Warner Bros. dropped the film.[6] On January 26, 2015, Netflix picked up the film, with Taylor Lautner, Nick Nolte, Blake Shelton, Whitney Cummings, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Dan Aykroyd, Will Forte, Nick Swardson, Terry Crews, Jon Lovitz, Vanilla Ice, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Danny Trejo, Chris Parnell and Lavell Crawford joining the cast.[1] On February 16, 2015, Jorge Garcia joined the cast.[2] Principal photography began on February 20, 2015, and will last through May 1, 2015.[7][2]
On April 23, 2015, about a dozen Native American actors quit the film in protest of its portrayal of the Apache culture.[8][9][10] Some of the actors that left were Navajo Nation tribal members Loren Anthony and film student Allison Young. The reason for their departure from the film is that they think the film portrays the Indians in a negative light and the film takes satire too far. They also note that the portrayal of women is degrading. [11] A representative of Netflix responded saying "The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of—but in on—the joke."[12]
Release
The film will premiere on Netflix in 2016.[1]
