The Park Community School is a mixed 11-16 state comprehensive school in Barnstaple, North Devon, England. It is maintained by Devon County Council. Most of the school's 1,440 pupils progress to further study at Petroc.
History
The Park Community School was opened in 1910 as Barnstaple Grammar School,[1] educating the youth of much of North Devon. In 1976 the school became a comprehensive and took pupils from the Barnstaple area. The school originally had four house named after famous Devon residents; Kingsley, Fortescue, Drake and Raleigh. Due to growing student numbers a fifth house, Chichester, was created in 1999. The school underwent extensive remodling during 2002 and 2003 and new Maths and Science departments were opened in September, linking the old North and South Buildings. A new canteen was also built and many old classrooms were redesigned and refurbished.
General
Park school is a specialist technology college and therefore there are small classes in the technology subjects: food, electronics, product design, graphics and textiles. The school day begins with a registration period either in a tutor room or assembly and then is divided into six 50 minute lessons. After the first two lessons is a twenty-minute break and then after period four is a lunch break. Students can either eat in the school canteen or in the "tuck shop". There is a good variety of food with healthy options and treats such as pizza, cakes and chips on a Friday.
Trips
A wide variety of trips are on offer at Park school. Some examples: Year seven residential to Torquay. Triple science trip to Alton towers. Gifted and talented trips for particular subjects. Annual ski trip open to all years. End of year activity days. Year ten Bude residential. (see Park website for images.)
Prefects
The current head prefects (2013–14) are: Wren Frost, Ellen Napier, Mathew Morrish and Ryleigh Sloman. Every prefect gets a badge, and a lanyard with their photo on. Each house has its own head prefects, sports prefect and charity prefects.
Learning mentors
Park school has a team of learning mentors who work with specific students to enrich and improve their time at Park school. They do one to one sessions and organise group activities.
