It features her more famous song, Lagat karejwa ma chot, phool gendwa na maar, a 1935 Gramophone recording.[1][2] It was produced with a grant from India Foundation for the Arts (IFA).
The making
Saba Dewan spent three years for intensive research for the documentary which looked closely at the arts and the lifestyle of the tawaifs of the time.
Synopsis
The story is that of a lost semi-classical Thumri song, Lagat Karejwa ma Chot, Phool Gendwa na Maar, sung in 1935 by Rasoolan Bai, the well known singer from Varanasi.[3][4] The film shows in detail that tawaifs were not mere sex workers, but were great artistes who contributed to music, dance, theatre, film and the Urdu literary tradition.
