The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is an upcoming spy-fi action comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie and co-written by Lionel Wigram, based on the 1964 MGM television series of the same name created by Sam Rolfe. The film stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki, Alicia Vikander, and Hugh Grant. The film will be released on August 14, 2015.

Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s period of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centers on U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin. The two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find her and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

Production

Development

Producer John Davis optioned the film rights to the 1960s TV show in 1993, setting up a development deal with Warner Bros. and series producer Norman Felton for a film adaptation. Davis estimated he commissioned 12 or 14 different scripts over the course of 20 years, with writers Jim and John Thomas, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra and Scott Z. Burns. Quentin Tarantino was briefly attached following the success of Pulp Fiction, but opted to make Jackie Brown instead. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. continued to labor in development hell with directors Matthew Vaughn and David Dobkin.^[9] Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct Scott Z. Burns's screenplay, with production slated to begin in March 2012. Executives from Warner Bros. wanted the budget to stay below $60 million, but Soderbergh felt that amount would not be adequate to fund the 1960s-era sets and props and international settings required in the film.^[10] Emily Blunt was nearly cast as the female lead,^[11] but Soderbergh departed in November 2011.^[12]

Guy Ritchie signed on in March 2013.^[13] On July 31, 2013, it was announced that Ritchie's adaptation would start filming in September 2013 in London and Italy.^[14][15]

Casting

In November 2010, George Clooney showed interest in the film^[16] and was in talks for the main role of Napoleon Solo, but he left in September 2011 due to a recurring back injury.^[17][18] After Clooney's departure, actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, Alexander Skarsgård, Ewan McGregor, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Kinnaman, Russell Crowe, Chris Pine, Ryan Reynolds, and Jon Hamm were considered for the lead role.^[19] On March 18, 2013, Tom Cruise was in early talks to take the lead in the film.^[13] Armie Hammer was cast in the second lead role as Illya Kuryakin on April 24, 2013, with Cruise as Solo.^[3] Swedish actress Alicia Vikander joined the film on May 8, 2013 as the female lead.^[5] On May 23, 2013, Cruise dropped out of the film, due to his commitment to Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.^[20][21] British actor Henry Cavill replaced Cruise in the lead role.^[1][2][22] Elizabeth Debicki was cast in a femme fatale role on July 31, 2013; Rose Byrne and Charlize Theron were earlier considered for the role.^[23] On August 8, 2013, Hugh Grant joined the cast as Alexander Waverly, the head of United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.^[4] Jared Harris was cast as Saunders on September 4, 2013,^[6] and Luca Calvani was cast as the film's main villain, Alexander.^[7] Simona Caparrini was cast to play Contessa.^[8]

Filming

The principal photography on the film commenced on September 9, 2013.^[24] As of October 25, 2013 filming was being undertaken at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich and Royal Victoria Docks, London and Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit in West Sussex, UK.

Music

On July 17, 2014, Daniel Pemberton was hired to score the music for the film.^[25]

Release

The film was previously set for a January 16, 2015, release,^[26] but on August 12, 2014, Warner Bros moved back the film's release date to August 14, 2015.^[27]

According to the trailer, which Released on February 2015, the year is 1963. An unknown criminal organization with ties to former Nazis” is said to have built an atomic bomb. This forces the United States and Soviet Union to cooperate — even to the point of assigning Solo and Kuryakin, shown here as being foes, to work together.^[28]

Marketing

According to The Projection List, the film's trailer was supposed to be shown before Kingsman: The Secret Service.^[29] However, the trailer premiered online several days after, on February 11th. ^[30]
