The Mall or Putra Place is a shopping mall located along Jalan Putra in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is situated across the street from the Putra World Trade Centre and the Seri Pacific Hotel. The complex was built by Metroplex Holdings Sdn. Bhd. (MHSB)[1] and opened on 12 June 1987 by Mahathir bin Mohamad, then Prime Minister. At the time The Mall was the largest shopping centre in Malaysia and was built to attract more shoppers from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.[2]

History

The Mall was built at cost of RM289 million and its launch by a light show.[3] The shopping centre was launched on 12 June 1987 by then Prime Minister, Mahathir bin Mohamad, who personally buried a time capsule that will be unearthed after a century, in 2087. The capsule contains a message written by Mahathir and is addressed to the citizens of the future.[4] The complex once had Malaysia's first Yaohan store which operated from the mall's opening in 1987 until 1997.[5]

The shopping mall was closed since 1 May 2013 for refurbishment and it is scheduled to be complete by July 2015. Meanwhile, the hotel above will remain in business as usual. [6][7]
