History

The Kickback is an American indie rock band from Vermillion, South Dakota formed in 2006.[1] The group was formed as singer/guitarist Billy Yost's "first attempt to get a 'college band thing' going" at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota.[2] Following the graduation of Yost and drummer/brother, Danny, the group relocated to Chicago in the summer of 2009.[3]

In the windy city they received attention from Rolling Stone's Hype Monitor blog[4] as well as Chicago music critic and Sound Opinions contributor Jim DeRogatis.[5] Yost explains the group's sound as wanting to be: "the Zombies listening to Jeff Buckley listening to a moderately-talented church choir listening to The Beatles in the 'back to basics' stage of their career who would stay together long enough to be influenced by the Sales brothers who wound up backing Iggy Pop in the 'Berlin era.' Our tunes wouldn’t express that at all, at the moment, however. So, I guess you can consider this an opportunity to get in on the ground level. I sound like Bernie Madoff."[3]

The band was a selection to the 2011 South by Southwest music festival[6] and was selected as "Band of the Month" by The Deli Magazine's Chicago website for the month of March 2011.[7]

Soon after, a few lineup changes occurred, and the Yost brothers posted very specific detailed ads on craigslist, which successfully caught the attention of bassist Eamonn Donnelly and guitarist Jonny Ifergan, both hailing from Washington DC and Mexico City respectively. The addition of Jonny and Eamonn solidified the lineup as a quartet in early 2012. The next few years saw the band playing numerous local and regional festivals, all the while crafting their sound, preparing them for their eventual trip down to Austin, TX in the summer of 2013 to record their full length debut produced by Spoon's drummer Jim Eno at his Public Hi-Fi Studio.[8]

In early 2014, Danny left the band to pursue other interests. Soon afterwards, Ryan Farnham, drummer from Catfish Haven joined the fold thanks to a recommendation by the band's mutual friend Phil, singer from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.[9]

Since then, the band has performed at the 2014 South by Southwest, North by Northeast, and CMJ music festivals and their debut album entitled Sorry All Over The Place is slated for an early 2015 release.

Podcast

Starting in December 2010, The Kickback began hosting their own podcast, Diary of a Disas-tour,[10] which features discussions and segments centered around the band and its current activities.[11] The episodes originate from on-the-road locations as well as at the band's rehearsal space in Chicago. Yost cites the podcast as effort to convey "what it's really like to be a band that can't afford to be making music 24-hours of the day" as well as "things that sort of influence the band's direction (Michael Keaton movies, the Muppets, manic-depression, etc.). The Podcast is nearing it's 100th episode.[12]
