The Innocents (play)

The Innocents is a 1950 play written by William Archibald that was first performed in New York at the Playhouse Theatre on February 1, 1950. The cast included Beatrice Straight, Isobel Elsom, Iris Mann, and David Cole. A subsequent production opened at the Morosco Theatre on October 21, 1976 and closed on October 30, 1976 after 12 performances.

Setting

It is set in the late 19th century at the drawing room of an old country house in England.

Productions

The show is based on the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The original production opened on February 1, 1950 and ran for 141 performances. It was revived Off-Broadway in 1958.

1976 Broadway production

The show was directed by Harold Pinter, scenery John Lee Beatty, costumes Deirdre Clancy, lighting Neil Peter Jampolis, music by Harrison Birtwistle, costume supervisor Mary McKinley, production manager Mitchell Erickson, stage manager John Handy, and press by C. George Willard and Barbara Price.

The cast starred Sarah Jessica Parker (Flora), Pauline Flanagan (Mrs. Grose), Claire Bloom (Miss Bolton), Michael Mackay (Miles), Dino Laudicina (Peter Quint), and Catherine Wolf (Miss Jessel). Understudies included Timothy Britten Parker and the Parker's siblings stepfather Paul Forste.
