The Haunted Airman is a psychological thriller film first aired on BBC Four on 31 October 2006. Adapted from Dennis Wheatley's 1948 novel The Haunting of Toby Jugg, it was directed by Chris Durlacher, and starred Robert Pattinson in the title role.[1][2]

Plot

The young pilot Toby Jugg (Pattinson) is cut down with his plane during a bombing on the city of Dresden during World War II. This incident forced him on the wheelchair and his aunt Julia (Stirling), decides to take him to a nursing home in Wales, headed by Dr. Hal Burns (Sands), in hopes that he will manage to recover.

His stay in the nursing home, where there are other guests, leads him to new terrors. His only outlet is the cigarettes, and the proximity of sister Sally, a sister. She starts suffering from terrible nightmares and visions. His aunt, Julia, with whom Toby was having an affair seems to be the only person he trusts, until circumstances make even her intentions dubious. Toby begins to suffer hallucinations and during the night he relives the terrible moments that led him to a wheelchair. He rejects the help of Dr. Burns and begins to suffer from psychological disorders that lead him to doubt everyone and everything, until he finally discover the sinister plot brewing in the nursing home, to take him down.

And praised Pattinson by saying that "(he) played the airman of the title with a perfect combination of youthful terror and world weary cynicism."[11][12]
