The project was first announced in August 2012, that Joel Edgerton had written a psychological thriller script titled Weirdo, with which Edgerton would also be making his directing debut.[6] On September 9, 2013, talking with the Screen International, Edgerton revealed that he would be starring in the film for a supporting role and he would also be producing the film along with Rebecca Yeldham through Blue-Tongue Films.[5] Rebecca Hall signed on to star in the thriller on November 3, 2014.[4] It was also confirmed that Jason Blum would also produce the film through his Blumhouse Productions banner.[4] Jason Bateman was set on January 13, 2015 to star in the film as Hall's character's husband.[2] On January 20, 2015, STX Entertainment had bought the United States distribution rights to the film.[7] STX retitled the film The Gift.[8] The film is Edgerton’s third feature screenplay to be filmed, after The Square (2008) and Felony (2013).[9][10][11]

Principal photography on the film began on January 19, 2015,[12] and ended on February 23, 2015.[13]
