"The Free Electric Band" is a song written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and performed by Hammond. The song reached #19 on the UK Singles Chart and #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.[1] The song appeared on his 1973 album, The Free Electric Band.[2] The song was produced by Hammond and arranged by Michael Omartian.[3]

The lyrics tell the story of a postwar middle-class American youth who rebels against the values of his parents by pursuing a musical career rather than the professional life that had been expected of him.

Other recordings

Lalla Hansson recorded the song in Swedish, as "Han gav upp alltihop (för att spela med sitt band)".[4] scoring a Tio i topp hit.
