Pteropurpura festiva (Hinds, 1844)

The Festivus is a publication about malacology and conchology published by the San Diego Shell Club in San Diego, California. Originating in 1970, the publication gradually became a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The Festivus remained as a peer-reviewed journal for many years during the time when the editor-in-chief was Carole Hertz. In 2014 the publication changed hands. It expanded its physical format, and started including popular articles. Carole Hertz was succeeded by David P. Berschauer.

Name

The publication's name is in honor of a species of carnivorous sea snail which occurs locally: the "festive murex", previously known as Murex festivus, and now known as Pteropurpura festiva.[1]

History

The journal was established in 1970 as a shell club newsletter, and gradually evolved to become a scientific journal which was published monthly from January through November each year until 2014. The founding editor was Carole Hertz, under whose guidance the journal grew from a shell club newsletter into a scientific journal.[2]

In February 2014, it was announced that The Festivus would, from that point on, be published quarterly in both electronic and print format, and, that in addition to scientific articles, popular articles of general interest and advertising would be included. Hertz stepped down as editor. The first quarterly issue was published in May 2014, which included articles naming new taxa.

Special supplements

Occasionally, The Festivus has published book-like "Special Supplements". Some examples are:
