The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management

Vision Statement- "To be a world leader in facilitating university level learning in the field of tourism and hospitality management".

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is a private Hotel School that offers Hospitality management studies located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was founded in 2001 under the brand of the Jumeirah Hotel Group.[2] The Academy is intended to provide business management degrees with a hospitality focus. The Academy offers both a Bachelor of Science, undergraduate degree and a Master of Science, post graduate degree. Additional courses offered at The Emirates Academy include an Associate degree as well as an Emiratisation department, language courses and ESL/Test of English as a Foreign Language programmes. The Emirates Academy is in academic association with one of the oldest hotel schools in the world, the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne.[3] Additional academic associations include the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. The Academy also maintains offices for study abroad and scholarship programs. The program allows students from either university to study for a semester in Dubai, students are also required to complete internship positions to earn credit toward a degree.[4]

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management would objectively like to play a strong, leading role in the growing tourism industry of the UAE and the region, something which is demonstrated by its mission statement. The Academy is a founding member of the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing’s[5]Emiratisation Task Force for Tourism and works closely with a number of other government sector institutions including the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding.[6]

History

The foundation of The Emirates Academy was due in large part to the recognition of a need for an institution able to offer management degrees in hospitality studies. The Academy is nonsectarian and accepts students of any nationality. The Academy has been in operation for more than 10 years. The 2013 graduating class was one of the largest to date in the history of The Academy, indicating an increasing interest in hospitality studies. The Academy has hosted events such as the EuroChrie 2008-2014 academic conferences, Nestlé cooking events, and the prize-giving and award ceremony of The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Guest lecturers such as Michel Roux, Ken Hom, Gary Rhodes, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Ainsley Harriott have hosted events in the Emirates Academy's Auditorium, presenting the student's with a full spectrum of their knowledge and experience. John Cleese, has also previously visited The Academy to talk to the students about his experiences in hospitality from a consumer's perspective.

Profile

The Academy is home to a multicultural student body of around 300 hospitality management students (January 2014). In 2013 the school enrolled more than 200 students from 50 different countries across its three intakes, a record since its inception in 2001. In 2014 the school enrolled 90 undergraduates and 15 post-graduate; and it is currently one of the few United Arab Emirates internationally accredited hospitality-specialised higher education institutions. Its curriculum encompasses all facets of general business management with a focus on hospitality management. Although not required, many students choose to work at the Jumeirah Hotel Group to supplement their education at the school, during their internship programs. The Academy employs 20 full-time faculty members, most with field management experience.

Dubai is one of the fastest growing tourism destination in the world, with projects such as The Palm Islands, Burj Khalifa, Dubailand, and the Dubai Mall. Dubai is also home to Emirates (airline), and has over 100 hotels planned and under development at the start of 2014.[7] A part of the luxury hotel group Jumeirah,[8] The Emirates Academy is situated opposite its sister properties such as the Burj Al Arab, Madinat Jumeirah, Wild Wadi Water Park and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. With the Jumeirah Hotel Group as one of the principle partners,[9] Dubai won its bid for the World Expo 2020. The staging of the world fair and the preparations leading are up to it are expected to result in 277,000 new jobs in the UAE, an injection of nearly $40 billion into the economy, and an increase in visitors of at least 25 million and up to 100 million.[10]

Degrees and Certificates

The School of Hotel Administration offers the following degrees on both undergraduate and graduate levels:

Concentrations include those in Hotel Operations Management, Management Accounting, Human Resources Management, Strategic Management, Business Ethics, Organisational Behauviours, Food and Beverage, Marketing, Information Systems, Specialty Operations and Law.

The Professional Development department[12] offers Certifications for hospitality industry professionals. Most Certification sequences are composed of 1 to 5 full-day courses. Certifications may be earned in Financial Management; Food, Beverage, and Restaurant Management; Customer Service; Marketing; Operations Management, Project Management; or Human Resources. The Professional Training and Development department of The Emirates Academy is also partnered with the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute[13] as well as WSET Global.[14] Industry professionals are therefore able to pursue continuing education and obtain internationally recognised certifications.

Accreditation and Associations

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is licensed and fully accredited by The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (UAE) of the United Arab Emirates. The Ministry's accreditation standards conform to the highest international criteria and students from accredited programmes are considered eligible for transfer and progression by other institutions worldwide.

Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, Switzerland The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management has an academic association with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), which is the world’s oldest and one of the most respected hospitality management schools. In addition, EHL is recognized by the Swiss government as part of Switzerland’s University of Applied Sciences and internationally, it is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges(NEASC). This academic association with EHL provides The Academy’s students with advantages in the hospitality industry.

Institute of Hospitality, United Kingdom The U.K. based Institute of Hospitality (IOH)[15] is a global professional institute that promotes high standards within the hospitality industry. It is a licensed bench-marking and accreditation agency for the U.K.’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).[16] All academic programmes conducted at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management have been accredited by the IOH according to its hospitality framework.

International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE), Australia The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE),[17] an Australian-based international accreditation body, audited the curriculum, staffing and facilities and determined that The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management met their international benchmarks. All THE-ICE accredited institutions are highly regarded for their hospitality and tourism courses, which include public universities, private hotel schools and vocational colleges from more than 10 countries.

Council of International Schools The Council of International Schools is a not-for-profit membership association of schools and post-secondary institutions. CIS defines standards and provides services that support the continuous improvement of international education. The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is a Higher Education Institution member of the Council of International Schools.

Institution, Faculty & Student Awards

2013: BID International Star for Leadership in Quality The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management was named a winner of the BID 2013 International Star for Leadership in Quality Award[18] in the Gold category in Paris; a trophy presented to companies and organizations from around the world that best adhere to excellence and innovation in their practices, putting quality first at every level.

2013: Taste New Zealand Chef Competition Anna Jentgen, a student at the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management won the first place in the Taste New Zealand Chef Competition[19] which named her ‘Champion Chef’.

2013: Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge The Director of Culinary Arts, Chef Michael Kitts and Mr Haresh Mohinani won The Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge,[20] after winning the Gold Medal in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

2012: Dubai Quality Appreciation Program Award, United Arab Emirates The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management was awarded the Dubai Quality Appreciation Program Award,[21] this is the only DQAP award given to an education institution in 2010.

Admission Requirements

The Emirates Academy offers diplomas up to an MSc or MBA to students from the age of 18. All the courses, with the exception of languages are taught in English. An advanced level of English is required. The Academy also offers internal TOEFL/EFL courses to the participants to help prepare them for full-time study in English.

Internships

After the first trimester students are given the opportunity to work for 4–6 months in the hospitality industry. Much of the industry is based upon great guest service skills. The Academy's Department of Industry Liaison; support officer provides useful tips and directs students to get the internship of their choice.
