The Diary of a Teenage Girl is an upcoming American drama film directed and written by Marielle Heller, based on the graphic novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures by Phoebe Gloeckner. The film stars Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgård, Bel Powley, Christopher Meloni, Quinn Nagle, and Austin Lyon. The film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The rights to the film were acquired by Sony Pictures Classics on January 26, 2015.[1] Sony will reportedly release the film later in 2015.[2] The film is Heller's first.

Synopsis

A story of Minnie's (Bel Powley) diary, in which she writes about her affair with her mother Charlotte's (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård).[3]

Writer/director Heller had received the graphic novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl as a Christmas gift from her younger sister around eight years ago.[4]

On January 10, 2014 Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgård and Bel Powley joined the cast of the film as lead,[5] Caviar will co-finance with Cold Iron Pictures, and will co-produce with Archer Gray Productions.[6] There was a casting call for extras on January 29, 2014.[3]

Filming

The shooting of the film began on January 10, 2014 in San Francisco.[5] On January 22, the crew was spotted filming.[7] On February 4, Christopher Meloni announced via Twitter that he was in San Francisco for shooting.[8][9]

Reception

Indiewire described the film as "genuine, poignant and hilarious".[10]

Accolades

At the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival the film won the Grand Prix of Generation 14plus section for best feature length film.[11]
