Coordinates: 43°02′06″N 71°27′32″W / 43.03500°N 71.45889°W The Derryfield School is an independent college preparatory, coeducational high school and middle school located in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. It is a day school serving grades 6-12.

History

Established in 1964, Derryfield is known in New Hampshire for its combination of academic, athletic, and artistic programs. Derryfield's school colors are maroon and white. The 2013-2014 tuition at The Derryfield School is $28,535. Financial assistance is available to qualifying applicants.[1]

Community service

Derryfield's commitment to public service is made clear in its mission statement: "Recognizing that academic achievement without compassion and concern for others is meaningless, we are committed to purposeful involvement in the world outside our school in both the local and the global community." Over three-quarters of the student body are involved in volunteer activities. The Middle School's Builders Club and the Upper School's Key Club, both affiliated with Kiwanis International, provide opportunities for students to become involved in community projects. For the school's 50th anniversary, the school set up the "50 acts of kindness" program, which helps out the Manchester community; for example, the 7th grade will be delivering paper cranes to local hospitals as a symbol of hope. Since 1991, the school has housed Breakthrough Manchester (formerly Summerbridge), the third oldest Breakthrough Collaborative site in the nation.

Athletics

Students in grades 7-12 are required to participate in two trimesters of athletics each academic year, while sixth graders participate in a comprehensive physical education and wellness program. The school competes in several sports, including cross-country running, crew, field hockey, fencing, golf, and soccer in the fall; basketball, skiing (alpine and Nordic), and swimming in the winter; and baseball, crew, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and equestrian in the spring. Derryfield competes within the NHIAA and has won more than eighteen championships in the past twenty years. The 2007 Girls' Field Hockey team won the school's first ever state title with a 17-0 record. The Derryfield Field Hockey Team won the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Division III state championships. In 2013, they tragically lost what would have been their 4th championship title in four years.

Derryfield Boys Soccer has also enjoyed success as of late, winning 3 championships the past 3 years in Division IV. The girls varsity team won the 2013 title as well.

Led by Coach Danny Arvanitis, the Derryfield Golf team won the 2012 and 2013 Division IV State Championship. The Derryfield golf program has also had recent individual success. Roger Larrivee '14 won the 2013 Division IV Individual State title and Patrick McGinley '15 took home the 2014 Division III Individual State championship.

Students may also earn credit for participating in Derryfield's non-competitive athletic options, including yoga, weight-training, and dance. Students rigorously pursuing sports not offered at Derryfield (e.g., gymnastics, etc.) may pursue an independent sport credit once a year in lieu of a team sport at the school.
