The Couture is a proposed apartment high-rise in Downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 44-story high-rise would be one of Milwaukee's tallest buildings.
Pending approval, Barrett Visionary Development would demolish the underused Milwaukee County Transit System building and build The Couture which would feature 302 high-end apartments, 50,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space; and a 570-space parking structure with 147 public parking spaces.[1]
Legal challenges
A sale proposal for the downtown transit building, if approved by the Milwaukee County Board, likely faces a lawsuit that could delay the project. A local group, Preserve Our Parks, says most of the site is covered by the public trust doctrine, which the group says must be upheld to prevent private development on Wisconsin's other filled lake beds. In December 2014, Milwaukee County officials petitioned the Wisconsin Supreme Court for legal approval to sell the downtown Milwaukee Transit Center.[2]
