The Case Centre

The Case Centre is an independent, educational, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation with no share capital and a registered charity. Its mission is to promote the case method in management education by raising awareness, increasing usage and developing the skills of case teachers and authors.[1]

The Case Centre was created in 1973 as the Case Clearing House of Great Britain and Ireland and was the result of a co-ordinated initiative by 22 institutions of higher education. The aim was to establish a facility for exchanging case materials among teachers of business administration. The UK office was set up at Cranfield School of Management, UK. The organisation obtained formal charity status in 1974. In 1991 CCHGBI became the European Case Clearing House to reflect the growth in case writing and teaching throughout Europe. In 1992 a US office was opened at Babson College to serve the North American market. In 2013, the organisation was rebranded as The Case Centre to support the global reach of its operations.

Materials distributed by The Case Centre

The Case Centre offers the largest collection of management case study materials to be found anywhere in the world. Over 46,000 business education teaching cases are available from the case collections of over 50 business schools, including Asia Case Research Centre, Hong Kong; CEIBS, China; Darden School of Business, US; Harvard Business School, US; IBS Hyderabad, India; IESE Business School, Spain; IMD, Switzerland; INSEAD, Abu Dhabi, France & Singapore; London Business School, UK; and Richard Ivey School of Business, Canada.[2]

A reprint service is offered for a growing number of leading international management articles (from Business Horizons; California Management Review; Harvard Business Review; IESE Insight; International Commerce Review: ECR Journal; Ivey Business Journal; and MIT Sloan Management Review).[3] Individual chapters are available from a range of Business Expert Press, Harvard Business Press, McGraw-Hill Education and McGraw-Hill Professional management text books.[4]

Case method training

The Case Centre has been running case method training workshops for nearly 40 years. The open workshop portfolio covers both general aspects of case writing and teaching and programmes for specialised situations, such as executive education or undergraduate. Workshops are held regularly at international locations and range in length from one-day introductory workshops to comprehensive three-day events. The Case Centre also runs workshops for teachers in sectors such as entrepreneurship and finance, which address the particular challenges of learning in specific areas.[5] Unique customised workshops are also held for organisations to ensure that learning objectives, time span and budget requirements are met.[6] Learning with cases is a new and challenging experience for many students. The Case Centre offers special tailored sessions at universities and business schools to help students use case studies.[7] The Case Centre's tutors include some of the world's most experienced teachers of the case method, several of whom have written books on the subject. All are experienced case authors.[8]

In 2013, The Case Centre held workshops in South America for the first time.

Case Awards

Awards are presented annually to recognise worldwide excellence in case writing and to raise the profile of the case method of learning. The Awards (formerly the European Case Awards) have been presented since 1991. Awards are made in up to nine management categories; for one overall winning case; two case writing competition categories for a case by a new author and for a newly authored case on a 'hot topic'; and to recognise the outstanding contribution of an individual associated with the case method.

A new competition category was introduced in 2012, Innovation in Case Teaching, designed to recognise dedicated management educators that are achieving excellence through innovative, creative approaches to case teaching. An INSEAD video case study focusing on the marketing strategies of the Portuguese paper company Renova won the overall global award for the best case study in 2012. The Awards receive international media coverage, including in The Economist, the Financial Times and The New Indian Express.
