Series 22 of British television drama The Bill consisted of 93 episodes, broadcast between 4 January and 28 December 2006. This series marked the departure of Adam Okaro from Sun Hill. Two episodes of this series remain unaired after the master tapes were stolen in a robbery at the show's recording studios in November 2006. On 5 February 2014, The Bill Series 22 Part 1-3 and The Bill Series 22 Part 4-6 DVD sets were released (in Australia).

Events take a sinister turn when Vince Parker is found dead, and it is left to Nixon and Webb to spot the links between Meadows' case and the beating of his son Benjamin in prison.

A young mother complains about the drug problem on her estate after she is threatened with a used needle, prompting Okaro to mount a raid which gives Hardy a chance to sample undercover work. Casper fails to lure Keane with the offer of a spare room, and reluctantly lets Fletcher move in.

De Costa develops a taste for street-level action when she helps Hunter and Perkins trace a machine gun-wielding shop raider, and is hailed a heroine after she wraps up the case in a dramatic showdown. Smithy's infatuation with gangster's wife Louise Larson leads to an agreement they will emigrate to Australia once she has testified against husband Pete and qualified for witness protection.

Smithy puts in a satisfying day's work as uniform branch arrest a property landlord found growing a secret crop of cannabis. But the besotted sergeant's romantic dreams are shattered when he sets out to meet Louise for the evening, only to be met by a gun-man. Hunter is speechless when Cindy turns up at the station with a toddler in tow and announces her plans to give up IVF treatment and adopt instead. Hemmingway and Stamp are called out to a hit and run, only to discover that Louise Larson has been killed, and that Smithy is at the wheel of the car.

Smithy wakes up to a living nightmare as he is charged with drink-driving and interrogated on suspicion of deliberately killing Louise. Valentine sounds off to Keane about the DPS, only to discover that she is Frank's daughter, and JT shocks his friends and colleagues by announcing he's going to live in Spain.

Smithy puts on a brave face for his court appearance but Meadows and CID's efforts to link Larson with Louise's death are derailed when their one lead - a gang member held on drugs charges - slips through the net. De Costa loses her appetite for community safety work after successfully investigating the case of a girl injured in an Angolan ritual exorcism with Sim, and Perkins' romantic hopes receive a setback. Manson, fed up of being on Keane's side decides to return to Sun Hill full time in his old DI post, to stay on side with the Sun Hill team.

Manson and Webb pressurise a local youth into supplying information on the shooting. Masters is contacted by a former informant for information about a business associate in Nottingham. Manson's wife Philippa shocks with the revelation that she is going to work in Spain.

Tough tactics and a high-risk operation pay off when the rival gang leaders are arrested on their way to a showdown. Having helped forestall a major outbreak of violence, Hardy feels alienated from his own community and decides to throw in his lot with the police, despite a suspicion of racism among his colleagues. Kapoor, Harman and Keane question a timid husband whose cheating wife has disappeared. Masters uncovers an illegal arms trading operation in Nottingham - and decides to leave Sun Hill to follow it up.

Nixon bails out Manson, and organises the CID end of an operation to trace a missing seven-year-old girl, while Hemmingway organises the uniform operation. The frantic parents agree to hold a press conference appealing for witnesses, but when it becomes clear all the known local paedophiles have alibis, inconsistencies in the father's account of events start to look suspicious. Hunter faces up to the fact his marriage is over. Meanwhile, Sun Hill is assigned its own station press officer, Mia Perry.

Perkins betrays his feelings for Ramani at her farewell party. Hardy, Valentine, Keane and Kapoor attend a disturbance at a snooker hall, while Nadir and Webb investigate an attack on the owner.

Nadir's off-the-record deal with gang member Jordan Tomlin backfires when a CID sting delivers only two of the promised eight automatic weapons. Sim feels guilty about putting James Tennant through the heartbreak of watching a reconstruction of his daughter's disappearance, but it pays off when a witness comes forward to corroborate his alibi. Perkins overcomes his shyness and finally reveals his true feelings for De Costa whilst helping her investigate her first case with the Child Abuse Investigation Team.

Nadir's maverick approach to the gangland gun trafficking blows up into a full-scale crisis when his informant, Jordan Tomlin, is shot during a DJ contest. Hardy resolves to have nothing more to do with cousin Dominic when he learns of his involvement in the crime, and is forced to decide between his loyalty to his family or the job, while Okaro has a public relations nightmare to sort out when the victim's mother criticises the police's handling of the case.

Smithy upsets the Longmarsh heavies by spurning their offer of protection and is beaten up for his pains, but it is the approach of Louise's funeral that drives him to despair. Casper enters a supposedly empty flat where he is surprised to find a naked woman, and her confused explanation of how she came to be there finally gives the Sun Hill detectives a lead in the Pete Larson case. Meadows, Hunter, Webb and Nadir try to unravel a series of property deals involving Pete Larson and Joel Gates and prove a connection with Carl Caplan, who claims to have seen Smithy kill Louise Larson.

Smithy is distraught when he's refused permission to attend Louise's funeral and loses control when he finds fellow prisoner Marty Johnson setting fire to a photograph of her. Meadows approaches the CPS with evidence of the link between Pete Larson and Carl Caplan, but Keane will only grant CID 24 hours to put the suspect under surveillance and come up with concrete proof that the sergeant was framed.

Feelings are running high following the death of Jordan Tomlin, and Okaro drafts in a full team to police a sell-out gig at the Bombastic nightclub. Forged tickets swell the crowd to dangerous levels and the punters turn nasty when Keane is forced to arrest a man for possession of drugs. Faced with a potential riot outside, Hemmingway makes a bad call, which leads to disaster. Hardy's frustration of Valentine ends with disastrous consequences.

The aftermath of the nightclub disaster leaves the Sun Hill relief in shock, and Okaro summons all the self-control he can muster to set aside personal tragedy before meeting Met Press Officer Mia Perry. Fletcher and Stamp face a traumatic morning trying to identify the bodies in a temporary morgue, and Keane reunites a mother with her dying son, before she stands up to her father about blaming Leela for a near riot outside the night before, and Leela is glad that Keane saved her future. At St. Hugh's, Hardy visits Valentine with the premise of an apology. Webb and Nixon investigate a case of stolen identity, but he is concentration is affected after becoming smitten with Mia Perry. Gold accompanies Okaro to his family's graves. Keane resigns from the DPS.

Rivalries emerge as Kapoor finds herself up against Harman in the election for the prestigious role of Met Federation representative, and a newcomer from the West End, DC Stuart Turner, is offered promotion ahead of Sim following a successful joint operation into a serious assault. Casper and Fletcher fall out when competition for a place on a driving course prompts Fletcher to play a prank, which leads to his friend's disqualification.

Feeling restless about his abandoned family, Perkins grows impatient with Turner's approach to a case and takes matters into his own hands to help secure the conviction of a violent criminal. Fletcher can't believe his luck after a night of passion with Harman, but disappointment looms. Perkins visits his estranged sixteen-year-old daughter.

Suzie makes her disappointment clear at being passed over for promotion. Smithy reprimands Bryant when she allows domestic concerns to interfere with an investigation.

Nadir and Perkins bend the rules over the beating of a suspected paedophile, thinking they have the backing of new boss Turner. However, when Meadows finds out, Turner is determined only to clear his own name. Morris Leatherhead trashes a kebab shop in a bid to get back to prison. Hunter applies for a transfer back to Derbyshire, but is later the victim of a serious assault.

Banter in the pub about Fletcher's conquest of Harman brings the relationship to a dramatic halt, while colleagues notice Nixon is cosying up to new boy Turner while the pair investigate a fraudster.

Hunter's relationship with solicitor Heather Lees draws comments from Nixon, while the pair work on a suspected rape case while brother Steve is promised a send-off to remember.

Stamp gets involved in police work while moonlighting as a cabbie - to Casper's amusement.

Two girls go missing in circumstances that echo the Amy Tennant case, and Webb is horrified to find he knows the fretful parents. Hardy threatens to report Valentine unless he can help track down the people who gave him a beating.

As Molly Parker makes a slow recovery, sister Charlotte makes a shocking confession that prompts Webb to confront their father with barely concealed fury. Perkins considers building bridges with his estranged family, but ex-wife Helen is not easily impressed.

Fletcher and Casper refer a case of bare-knuckle fighting to Sim and Nadir, who connect it to a GBH case they are already working on. Keane and Hardy interview a man in connection with a case of criminal damage, but he confesses to murdering his wife fourteen years earlier. Okaro wants Valentine referred to the DPS over his neglect of duty. Valentine's outbursts on duty lead Gold to insist he sees a psychiatrist. Gold presses Fletcher and Casper into entering an inter-services boxing competition. Keane feels awkward when her boyfriend joins the relief for drinks after work.

Casper realises he can't wriggle out of the boxing contest after Gold presents him with a gruelling training schedule, and Fletcher's pursuit of Keane goes a stage further when they visit the pub to celebrate a result on Okaro's new capture car initiative. Hunter returns from Cardiff and bitterly reminds Turner that Nixon is a grandmother, but fails to stop the flirtatious pair arranging a dinner date after working on a stolen car case.

Nadir and Hunter enlist the help of an informant to crack a counterfeit perfume scam. Turner and Nixon investigate a suspicious death when a couple claim to have found a body in their house. The lovestruck DSs share a passionate kiss. Keane is single again, and both Fletcher and Hardy try their luck.

Fletcher and Keane come across a toddler on the streets covered in blood. Hunter and Sim try to uncover the truth behind two conflicting accounts of domestic violence. With Fletcher out of action, Casper is left to represent Sun Hill at the boxing competition.

Sandra Valentine is filing for divorce, and after being dangerously close to crashing the Area Car driving recklessly in pursuit, Gold forces Valentine to take leave. Nadir and Hunter investigate a luxury health club that may be a front for a major drug syndicate. Webb is floored when a journalist asks him about the traumatic events in his past. Hemmingway tries to keep her occupation a secret from her new boyfriend.

Nadir poses as a corrupt police officer in an attempt to expose a major drug operation. Webb investigates when the young target of a mugging is found carrying money he cannot account for. Heaton arrests a young drug dealer while out for a jog. Webb decides to open up to Mia Perry, but his confession could end their relationship. Hemmingway decides to tell her new boyfriend that she is a police officer.

Turner takes control of the investigation into the serial rapist. Stamp investigates his fellow cab drivers, and Walker mounts a decoy operation to trap their suspect. Perkins has to manage a dangerous offender, and tries to establish a new relationship with his estranged son. Smith and Walker deal with the morning after the night before.

Hardy and Stamp are called to an incident at a nightclub. Perkins is shocked to discover that his daughter, Holly, has been taking ecstasy. Perkins and Manson pose as buyers to trap the dealer, but Nadir blows the operation, warning Kristen Shaw in an attempt to further ingratiate himself with her. Ackland and Noble come across a Croat woman who has been badly assaulted. Turner traces her to an address where a number of trafficked women are being held. Noble discovers a tape confirming that the women are being sold. An illegal immigrant on the witness protection scheme decides not to testify against a trafficker, as he fears his wife is being held by the gang. While Turner coordinates activities with SOCA, Hunter and Nixon are sent to Bucharest to liaise with the Romanian police. Hunter decides to mount his own investigation, but things go badly and he and Nixon become targets.

Yvonne and Honey deal with a group of youths who are bullying a homeless man, and when they find the ringleader spraying down the man at a car wash, Hemmingway turns the washer on the yob, but despite positive public feedback, the PC is suspended. Diane and Reg are called to St Hugh's to deal with a drunk and are surprised to have to deal with a drunken Roger. Heaton rejects an advance from DAC Hobbs.

Terry and Heaton brief the team on Barry and tells them that they know he is planning a deal involving an illegal shipment from Spain but they need to find out when and where the deal is happening. Terry is furious to discover Barry has swapped cars inside the garage with girlfriend Sharon who has acted as a decoy, and Terry & Heaton question Sharon and when they convince her that Barry is using her. Max Little's son Taylor has arrived at the deal and he is found with a bloodstained knife and is arrested for GBH. Will and Dan find Max about to kill Barry on a motorway overpass. Leela and Reg find a beaten man in the park with head injuries. She discovers he is a busker and doesn’t care that he has had three hundred pounds stolen. He is very cagey so Leela returns to the station to investigate further. They discover Jean is an illegal immigrant but after bonding with him, Leela takes sympathy on the asylum seeker and lets him and his wife go before Immigration arrive. Later, in her role as Fed-Rep, Leela meets with the suspended Yvonne about her creative use of a car wash power-jet and they chat about what happens next. Yvonne admits that she’d rather resign than go through another inquiry with the CPS. Heaton later tells Yvonne that the CPS have agreed to drop the suspension as long as she is disciplined in-house. However, Yvonne is stunned when he tells her that if she is to stay at Sun Hill, she must control her impulsiveness.
