The Beautiful Letdown Tour was a massive series of concerts by the alternative rock band Switchfoot, played to audiences all around the world. It was the band's first real headlining tour, spanning six different legs, and was carried out in support of the band's double-platinum selling 2003 album of the same name. The band also made many late-night television appearances, thanks to the giant radio success of the singles from the album. The tour was depicted through one live concert DVD, Live in San Diego.
Itinerary
The band played the first show of the tour the same week the album was released,[1] and sold out nearly every show in advance, including the top U.S. markets such as Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Chicago, Nashville and Los Angeles, notably selling out the famed rock venue The Roxy.[1]
The second leg of the tour commenced October 23, 2003 at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. This portion of the tour ran until November 7, 2003, where the band entertained a hometown crowd at the SOMA in San Diego, California.
In February, 2004, Switchfoot toured across key radio stations across America, embracing the success of their singles "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move."[2] This was quickly followed by yet another full-time headlining tour in March.[3]
The band then carried the tour overseas, playing a limited amount of shows in Europe and Australia for a series of concerts September 10 – 22, 2004. Three of the shows in Europe were in support of fellow alternative rock acts Alter Bridge, and were played in Berlin, Amsterdam, and London,[4] while shows in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia were sold out. It was reported that most of the crowd unabashedly were only interested to see Switchfoot, and promptly left before the main act, Killing Heidi, took the stage.[5] This in effect, represented the fourth leg of the tour.
Later, in October, 2004, the band launched the fifth leg of the tour, in support of the single "This Is Your Life," touring across the states once more, concluding at the Wright Center in Birmingham, Alabama. This was followed by their sixth and final leg, a proper headlining tour once more across Australia, performing 7 times in 8 days. Switchfoot bassist Tim Foreman expressed the band's affinity to Australia, saying "It's an amazing feeling to be on the other side of the world and have a few thousand people singing our songs louder than we are... it made us feel like family." [6]
