The Amazing Race 3 is the third installment of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. This season featured 12 teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world, making it the first season to have 12 teams. It premiered on October 2, 2002 and ended on December 18, 2002.

Friends Flo Pesenti and Zach Behr were the winners of this Race, with Flo becoming the first female winner in the race's history.

The complete season was released on DVD, November 22, 2011, exclusively on Amazon.com via their CreateSpace program.

Production

Development and Filming

The starting line of The Amazing Race 3 place in Everglades National Park in Florida.

The third season of The Amazing Race traveled a total of 41,000 miles (66,000 km) across four continents and 13 countries (a record later matched by The Amazing Race 10), all of which were newly visited, unlike previous seasons. One of the new countries, Spain, was not featured for this season but would be visited again in The Amazing Race 10. Filming began on August 9, 2002 and finished on September 7, 2002.

During Leg 3, Dennis and Andrew (the first father/son team on the series) won the Fast Forward, yet were eliminated on the same leg—a first in the show's history. This would not happen again until Leg 10 of The Amazing Race 20, 17 seasons later. This team received headlines before the season began due to Dennis being a conservative Southern Baptist and Andrew an openly gay cheerleader. Andrew later returned to blog on CBS.com's Return of the Racers for seasons 9, 10, and 11.

During Leg 4, Heather and Eve were the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop in Portugal, but they misread a clue that told them to walk to the Pit Stop rather than take a taxi. They proceeded to walk the rest of the way, but received a seven-minute time penalty for the advantage gained (the second team arrived seven minutes later), plus an additional 30 minutes. Since all of the other teams arrived at the Pit Stop less than 37 minutes afterward, Heather and Eve became the first team ever to arrive first at a Pit Stop yet still be eliminated. Heather and Eve later stated in interviews that one of the production crew traveling with them told them it was OK to take the cab, though production has stated that this is not true, and would be irrelevant in any case because the clues are not open to subjective directions.

During Leg 5, teams were required to drive marked vehicles more than 100 miles from Portugal to the port in Algeciras, Spain. Four of the eight teams incorrectly fueled their cars using unleaded gasoline instead of diesel, causing the cars to become inoperable. The four stricken teams handled the situation very differently: Teri and Ian recovered almost immediately when Ian borrowed a siphoning line from a gas station, drained the tank, and refilled with diesel; Flo and Zach oddly found an open repair shop in the middle of the night that fixed their vehicle; Aaron and Arianne called for a tow truck and were taken to a different repair place after a very long delay; and Kathy and Michael had the car brought back to the station, left it overnight, and became the last team to get underway with a fixed car (which contributed to their elimination).

During Leg 6, Andre and Damon were officially detained when their taxi took them far out of the way in Morocco and they encountered a local official who wanted to seize their passports. Andre and Damon refused, and the show's security team had to come help them out of the situation.

During Vietnam legs, all route markers were colored solid yellow instead of red and yellow. This was done to avoid confusion with the former South Vietnamese national flag, which is also red and yellow.

During post-race interviews during the premiere episode for All-Stars, Ian claimed that they were less than 2 minutes behind Flo & Zach at the finish line.

Cast

The cast of The Amazing Race 3 was increased to 12 teams and included soccer moms, law school graduates, a Vietnam War veteran, and a set of model twins. Jill and her brother F.T. originally applied for Season 1. Later, her brother was killed in 9/11 and John Vito and Jill applied in remembrance of him.[1]

John Vito and Jill hosted a show that promoted Singapore tourism.[2]

Teri and Ian along with John Vito and Jill were selected to compete in The Amazing Race All-Stars among a cast of returning teams from seasons 1-10.

Zach later worked on NBC's production crew for the 2004 Summer Olympics.[3] He later married Elyse Steinberg in Hopewell Junction, New York and is now a camera operator for MTV. Michael and Kathy got married in Italy and are now parents.

Aaron (of Aaron and Arianne) accidentally stumbled upon one of the pit stops of Season 6 while backpacking in Europe.

Flo and Drew got together romantically and dated for several years after the race ended. They declined to race in the All-Stars because Flo thought the race brought out the worst in her, and also because she did not want to do the race without Zach (who was not asked to join All Stars). Flo is now Dan Abrams' girlfriend and the couple announced in January 2012 that they were expecting their first child.

This season also featured Gurmit Singh, who handed the clues during the Leg 10 Detour. He stars in a Singaporean TV series called Phua Chu Kang. Miss Singapore Universe 2001 Jaime Teo appeared as the local greeter in Singapore leg.[4]

Marketing

This season had four official sponsors, Royal Caribbean International, Kodak, American Express and T-Mobile. Besides trips, Royal Caribbean provided prizes in vacation tours on each team arrives first in Pit Stop.

Awards

In 2003, this installment of the race won the inaugural Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality/Competition Program.

Leg 1 (United States → Mexico)

The Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City was the first destination in The Amazing Race 3.

Airdate: October 2, 2002

The third season of The Amazing Race started in Everglades National Park, host Phil Keoghan pointed the teams out with their bags and hold their first clue, instructed them to travel to Mexico City, Mexico. They were instructed to drive themselves to Miami International Airport and were told that the first 7 teams would leave on an earlier flight than the last 5 teams.

Upon arriving in Mexico City, teams had to head to Angel of Independence where they received a picture of a man named Pablo. Teams had to use the picture to figure out that his location was at Zócalo, the historic town square. They then were instructed to travel to Hotel De Cortes, where they had to find the desk for Mexi-Mini Charters and sign-up for one of three charter buses leaving the next morning, two hours apart, to an unknown destination.

The next day, teams encountered the Fast Forward, and they were required to travel to Plaza Santo Domingo and search for one typist out of dozens who would have a "special message" for them to win the Fast Forward and direct them to the Pit Stop. Otherwise, teams had to participate in the first Detour: Wings or Wheels. In Wings, teams had to board a plane which climbed to an altitude of over 10,000 ft (3,000 m). Then, each team member had to skydive in tandem with an instructor. When both team members landed, an instructor would give them their next clue. In Wheels, teams chose one of the donkey-drawn carts and, using a map supplied to them, directed a driver, who speaks no English, to a 7 mi (11 km) route marker course through a Mexican village. The clue teams received after the Detour instructed teams to Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas in Puente de Ixtla for the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (Mexico)

In this leg's Fast Forward, one team could choose to join the Voladores of Papantla.

Airdate: October 9, 2002

At the start of the leg, teams had to drive themselves to Pyramid of the Sun, and upon arrival, they must climb 248 steps up to reach the clue at the top, instructing them to travel by bus to Cancún. The Fast Forward for this leg which one team had to travel to the Museum of Anthropology and find a group of performers called the Voladores of Papantla. Team members then had to climb a 100 ft (30 m) pole and swing around the pole to the bottom and win the Fast Forward award.

The other teams arrived in Cancún and find San Marino Marina for the Detour, the chose between Horse Power and Man Power. In Horse Power, teams used a WaveRunner and searched a large area of the lagoon for the clue. In Man Power, teams used a kayak and searched a small area for the clue. Both Detour clues had to aboard their scheduled watercrafts from Playa del Carmen to Muelle Fiscal in Cozumel.

Once there, they had to find the Roadblock clue, and where it asked "For someone who is ready for the swim of a lifetime". One team member had to put on goggles and then jump into a lagoon and swim with a family of dolphins while searching for the next clue at the bottom, sending them to the Pit Stop at Diamante K Bungalows in Tulum with a ferry back to the mainland.

Leg 3 (Mexico → United Kingdom)

Dunnotar Castle in Stonehaven was both the location of the Roadblock and Pit Stop on this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: October 16, 2002

At the start of the leg, teams instructed to travel next to England. Upon departing, teams must board a flight back to Mexico City for London. Once there, they must take a train to Cambridge. For the Fast Forward of this leg, one team traveled to the Duxford Imperial War Museum and had to maneuver a tank through a battlefield obstacle course. The first team to complete the task in 90 seconds or less would win the award.

In Cambridge, other teams had to take the Detour, a choice of Punt and Bike. In Punt, teams rowed a boat called a punt down the River Cam with only a pole and small paddle to navigate the boat 1-mile (1.6 km)In Bike, teams must ride a tandem bicycle on a marked 6-mile (9.7 km) course through Cambridge. At the end of either Detour, they would retrieve the next clue from under a bridge. The Detour clues instructed teams to Parker's Piece and must take a charter bus to Aberdeen, Scotland for one of three departure times leaving at 7:30 pm, 10:00 pm and 1:30 am the following day.

Upon arriving in Aberdeen, teams made their way to Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven and searched their Roadblock clue: "For someone who is feeling a bit gamey". One team member had to compete in three traditional Scottish games. In the Caber toss, team members must throw a caber making a topple end over and having it land within the designated lines. In the hammer throw, team members had to throw a hammer so that it lands inside the box marked on the ground. In the shot put, they had a toss a heavy rock forward to the finish line. Once the rock reaches the finish line, team members would get their next clue, instructed them to find the Pit Stop nearby.

Leg 4 (United Kingdom → Portugal)

Torre de Belém in Lisbon was the site of fourth Pit Stop of this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: October 23, 2002

To start the leg, teams find Stonehaven Harbor and had to search a bottle to find "message in a bottle" clue from inside, instructing the label from a message is Calem Port Lodge and the location that would be fly is the city of Porto, Portugal. Upon arrival, they were encountered with the Detour, a choice between Old School or New School. In Old School, teams loaded a barrel of port wine weighing more than 90 lb (41 kg) onto a Portuguese boat, and helped to row it across Douro River. They then delivered it to O Muro restaurant to receive their next clue. In New School, teams loaded crates of wine bottles onto one of the marked trucks and drove them to three different restaurants: Chez Lapin, Retiro dos Carvalhos, and Café Majestic in Porto. In both choices, teams had to get signatures to prove that they made the deliveries correctly to receive their next clue.

In the Fast Forward, teams had to complete a puzzle.[5] In this Leg's Detour, teams chose between Old School and New School. The Detour clues sent teams to travel by train to the national capital of Lisbon, and upon arrival, they made their way to Gate F of Estádio do Restelo for the Roadblock where it asked, "The person who performs this task should have long arms and fast feet". One team member had to enter one of the soccer goals and block one penalty kick from a teenage Portuguese soccer player. Once the referee has determined that the goal was properly blocked, the team would receive their next clue. Teams were told to travel by foot to the Pit Stop at Torre de Belém.

Leg 5 (Portugal → Spain → Morocco)

While in Morocco, teams involved in Moroccan infamous traditional dyeing industry.

Airdate: October 30, 2002

At the start of the leg, the clue received at the start point instructed teams to find "the Westernmost Point of Continental Europe" - which refers to Cabo da Roca as their next destination. Upon arrival, they found the Detour clue, giving a choice of Ropes and Slopes. In Ropes, teams had take one of the shuttle buses to Urse cliffs and rappel down 300 ft (91 m) to the shore below. In Slopes, teams hiked down a sloping trail to the shore below. At the end of either Detour, teams picked up their next clue on the bottom. The clues instructed teams had to travel to Tangier, Morocco. First, they must take a marked cars to a ferry terminal in Algeciras, Spain and board a ferry to Tangier.

Upon arrival in the city of Tangier, teams had to find Viajes Flandria travel agency, and they had to sign up for charter buses departing one hour apart to the city of Fez with only enough room on each bus for three teams each. Once arrived in Fez, they made their way to the Old City and find Dar Dbagh Chouara Tannery for the Roadblock clue: "For someone with a keen sense of direction but a not so keen sense of smell". One team member had to go to Dar Dbagh Chouara Tannery and search through 25 vats of foul-smelling dye in order to find their next clue, directing them to the Pit Stop at the rooftop of Borj Nord.

Leg 6 (Morocco)

In this leg's Roadblock in Marrakech, one team had to sell 5 bowls of escargot.

Airdate: November 13, 2002

To start the leg, teams had to travel next to the largest city of Casablanca and find Hassan II Mosque to search with their next clue, instructing them to travel by train to Marrakech. For the Fast Forward, team members had to look through piles of carpets in a carpet shop to find the one with the Fast Forward design on it to win the award.

In Marrakech, other teams had to take the Detour: Now You See It and Now You Don't. In Now You See It, teams chose a pair of horses and rode to a route marker that was visible from where they were. Then they would dig for a clue painted on in the inside of a clay pot, hidden in the sand. In Now You Don't, teams choose a sand bike and rode to a marked flag that wasn't visible from where they were and found a clue etched on a stone. Once found, they could then make a rubbing of the clue onto a piece of paper. The Detour clues where teams they received and was written almost entirely in Arabic. The teams had to translate the clue before moving on to the Café Glacier.

At Café Glacier, teams encountered with the Roadblock: "For one person should be able to work a crowd". One team member had to team up with a local food vendor and help assemble his stall. Then they had to sell 5 bowls of escargot, at a rate of MAD5 each (about 47 cents) and the vendor would give them their next clue, sending them to the rooftop of Riad Catalina for the Pit Stop.

Leg 7 (Morocco → Germany → Austria → Germany)

Teams traveled to Friedensengel in Munich and had to find Kasperle to order to get their next clue.

Airdate: November 20, 2002

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to fly next to Munich, Germany. Upon arrival, they had to head to Friedensengel and where had to find a children's puppet called Kasperle. When they found him, the puppet would hand them their next clue, sending them to Innsbruck, Austria and had to find Annasäule. While in Munich, the Fast Forward for this leg teams had to find a surfer riding on the curls of the Eisbach River. Once they found him, they had to attract his attention and meet up with him to claim the Fast Forward award.

At Innsbruck, other teams had to take the Detour, whether they choose between Sled and Skate. In Sled, teams took a bobsled down an Olympic bobsled track along with a team of professional bobsledders at speeds of 65 km/per hour to receive their next clue. In Skate, teams went to an ice rink and had to run a skating relay with a pair of professional ice skaters to receive their next clue.

The Detour clues directed teams by gondola to Seegrube Station where they found the Roadblock and asked, "For someone who will welcome the chance to dangle for a while". One team member had to ride a gondola half-way up, put on safety gear and descend 230 ft (70 m) to the ground on a rescue cable to get their next clue. While they ascended back to the ground, teams instructed themselves to the Pit Stop at Bullachberg Castle back in Germany.

Leg 8 (Germany → Switzerland)

While in Switzerland, teams visited the infamous Rheinfall.

Airdate: November 27, 2002

To start the leg, teams traveled to Augustinerhof Farm and had to search inside of a large haystack for their next clue, sending them to the Rheinfall in the country of Switzerland. Upon departing, they must take a ferry from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn, and then take a train to Schaffhausen. At Rheinfall, they must board a boat and find their next clue, instructing to travel by train to the city of Zurich.

In Zurich, teams had to find Lindenhof and where had to find a Swiss officer who would lead them into a flagged Swiss vault with their next clue: the Detour: given the teams a choice of Count the Money and Run the Numbers. In Count the Money, teams had to count a large amount of Swiss currency inside of a jar right next to the safe. In Run the Numbers, teams had to search the streets around Zürich as far as a mile away to find three different numbers: The number on the metal head statue on the intersection of Sihlstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse,[6] the sum of the numbers on the north face of a clock on St. Peter's Church and the number of trees in Lindenhof marked with red ribbons. Both detour options gave the same number (127850), which was used as a combination to open a safe containing the next clue.

The Detour clue instructed teams to travel by train to Grindelwald and find a route marker nearby the railway station, learning themselves to travel to the field for the Roadblock: "For someone who is ready to take a shot at success". One team member had to "relive" the story of Swiss hero William Tell by using a crossbow to shoot an apple off a mannequin's head with one instructor to load the crossbow every time to receive their next clue, instructing them to the Pit Stop at Chalet Arnika.

Leg 9 (Switzerland)

Teams visited the Château de Chillon in the city of Veytaux, only to encounter a Roadblock.

Airdate: December 4, 2002

To start the leg, teams had to head to Gletscherschlucht and where had to venture into the gorge and find a key to unlock one of the marked cars to receive their next clue. Once they've reached the clue, teams had to take a car train through the Alps to reach the Red Bridge. For the Fast Forward, teams had to find a cheese making cabin in Kandersteg and eat enough pieces of Swiss cheese from a wheel of cheese to completely reveal the Fast Forward award hidden underneath.

Other teams had to do the Detour, the choice between Extreme Swiss and Very Swiss. In Extreme Swiss, each team member had to walk onto a narrow red bridge and take the largest bungee jump in Europe 620 ft (190 m) into the gorge below until receiving their next clue. In Very Swiss, teams had to drive 8 miles (13 km) to a farm and chase after 75 goats. Each goat had a bell on its neck, but only 5 had keys in them. When they find a key, they could unlock their next clue. The Detour clues were instructed to tell heading to their cars, they have the option to make one phone call to their family and friends back home using a T-Mobile phone. They had to complete the call before heading their next destination: Château de Chillon in Veytaux at the banks of Lake Geneva.

At the Chateau, teams where they find the Roadblock clue: "For someone who is a nuts and bolts person". One team member had to assemble a Swiss army bike from a pile of parts with an identical bike to use as a reference. Once the expert has confirmed the bike has properly assembled, teams may ride their bikes 3 miles (4.8 km) to the Basset Marina in Montreux. Once at the Marina, teams must abandon their bikes and use a marked pedalboat to reach the Pit Stop at Steamship Savoie.

Leg 10 (Switzerland → Malaysia → Singapore)

At the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, teams had to convince a local to take their photo. Their next clue was found on the back of the developed photograph.

Airdate: December 4, 2002

During the Pit Stop, the steamship sailed from Montreux to Lausanne and where it started the leg. Upon departing, teams made their way to Jet d'Eau in Geneva and where they received a flag representing their next destination country and were told to find the Petronas Twin Towers, teams had to figure out that their next clue was in Kuala Lumpur.

At the Petronas Twin Towers, teams had to find a local and have them take their picture in front of the towers, using a Kodak EasyShare Digital Camera. Once they've walked 1 mile (1.6 km) through the streets to the Ampang Park Shopping Center, teams had find a Kodak shop where they could develop their pictures of that Towers, where the clue would be printed on the back of the photo, teams must take themselves by train to Singapore and upon arrival, they were told to search for Margaret Thatcher in National Orchid Garden, and left to figure out that "Margaret Thatcher" is actually a flower plaque.

In the National Orchid Garden, teams encountered with the Detour: Dry and Wet. In Dry, teams drove to the apartments in Choa Chu Kang which are located near several streets with similar, almost identical, names. Once inside, they would need to locate Unit #10-137 containing Singaporean TV star Gurmit Singh in the television series Phua Chu Kang to get their next clue. However, the elevators in the flat stopped in random order, the apartments numbers were scrambled, and all of the streets on the complex had nearly identical names, making it more difficult for teams to find the unit. In Wet, teams drove to the Singapore Zoo and had to find "Mermaids of the Sea". They had to figure out that they were looking for the manatee enclosure and had to swim through the pool to get the clue on the other side.

The Detour clues teams direct to Suntec City and find Fountain of Wealth. This task was a Roadblock, which was shown on television as a miscellaneous task after the Detour, one team member also had to retrieve a clue from the middle of the Fountain of Wealth, sending them to Mount Faber for the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Singapore → Vietnam)

Cyclos were featured for this leg, as part of the country's predominantly form of transportation, particularly the roadblock (the shown picture is in Hanoi).

At the start of the leg, teams were headed next to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Upon arrival, they had to find Bac Ho Statue in Rex Square and its next clue. The clue told them to travel to Mekong Delta in Cái Bè and get their Detour clue, given the teams a choice between Easy Buy and Hard Sell. In Easy Buy, teams chose a sampan and rode it into a floating market looking for a vendor who sells water coconuts (called dừa nước in Vietnamese). They had to buy one at any price they could. In Hard Sell, teams chose a shoulder basket and carried fruit into the market area and attempted to sell the fruit for money. Teams had to raise 40,000₫ (dong VND - $2.50) by selling as much fruit as was needed. At the end, teams brought the money back to a woman who would verify their earnings and give them their next clue.

The Detour clues instructed teams to travel back to Ho Chi Minh City and find 2A Ton Duc Thang Street in the edge of Saigon River to find the clue for the Roadblock: "For person that should have strong legs and strong back". One team member had to drive a cyclo and transport their teammate through a marked course, which included a ride on a ferry over Saigon River. Both team members could then run to the next Pit Stop at Café Thu Thiem.

Leg 12 (Vietnam)

The Imperial Palace in Huế was visited during this Leg.

Airdate: December 18, 2002

To start the leg, teams traveled by train to the city of Huế, and upon arrival, they made their way to the Hiển Lâm Các Pavilion at Imperial City to get their next clue, sending them to Nam O bridge in Da Nang for the Detour clue, giving teams a choice of between Basket Boats and Basket Bikes. In Basket Boats, each team member had to figure out how to cross a river in basket boats to the clue box on a nearby island to receive their next clue. In Basket Bikes, each team member took a bicycle laden with dozens of shrimp baskets and had to travel down the street to the clue box, 1-mile (1.6 km) away.

The Detour clues directed teams to a Boat Quay at Bach Dang Dock in the middle of Thu Bồn River in Hội An where they find the Roadblock clue, asking "For person that should be fishing for a clue". One team member had to climb onto a Vietnamese fishing platform and use a wooden winch to raise the fishing net out of the water with hands and feet. The clue was dangling underneath and must take them and their partner by sampan to China Beach for the Pit Stop.

Leg 13 (Vietnam → United States)

Wailua Falls on the island of Kauai was the location of this season's final Detour.

In the previous Pit Stop at China Beach, teams opened their clues and told themselves to head to Quang Minh Temple in Da Nang and find the Buddha's feet at that temple to search with the next clue. Upon arrival, teams were told to head next to Honolulu, Hawaii, and they must first depart by train to Hanoi and travel by plane to Honolulu. Once the teams arrived in Honolulu, teams where to find Puaena Point and they must get a blessing from a traditional Hawaiian priest known as Kahuna, who would give them the next clue.

The clue where it told the teams are heading to the island of Kauai. Once there, they must travel to Wailua Falls and picked up their final Detour clue, given the choice of Quick Drop and Slow Walk. In Quick Drop, teams took a quick drop 160 ft (49 m) to the Falls below on a zipline. After the drop, teams have to swim to shore and followed the flags to the clue behind the waterfall. In Slow Walk, teams walked down a marked trail to the same clue.

The Detour clues instructed them to fly their final destination: Seattle, Washington. Upon arrival, they had to head to Kerry Park to look with the next clue, telling them to travel by foot to the International Fountain at Seattle Center. Once there, they must head to Lincoln Park for the final Roadblock: "For person that should have a good memory". One team member had to choose a totem pole and spin the animal faces so that they are ordered in the same chronological order:

When the animals are in the correct order, the mouth of the bottom of the pole opened to reveal the final clue, the teams instructed to the Finish Line at Gas Works Park.
