Thana, Malakand

Thana is the biggest town of Malakand Agency and also the biggest town of the Malakand Division. The name is from Pashto word tanra, and is written with nounghuna in Pashto. it was the place of jirga, and therefore it is known as Tanra.

Its history can be dated to 3000 BC which are present at nookano ghund near mora sar. The first Aryan graveyard is also discovered here in 1964 by dr ahmed hassan dani and Dr Munawar Khan of Thana. The town is populated by 200,000 people of which 74,000 are registered voters. It is a highly educated town of Pakistan where the education ratio exceeds to 98%. It is famous for its fruit farms & rice fields. The main families of thana are Ali Khail,Khan KOr, Bazidkhail, Katorkhail, Babakhail,Palao Khanan(Khan Khail) of which are the sub castes. The whole division was previously Malakand agency inclusive of the princely states of Swat, Dir, Amb and Chitral. Kalam and upper swat was part of malakand agency till 1969. The college was commissioned in 1962 and now housing five colleges.

The boundary of Thana is connected with Jalala in east, Pul chowki in west, swat river in north while Palai in south 1.[1] Geographically Thana is divided into three parts, Thana khas, Thana jaded and Thana Bandajat. The main town included is Habetgram, Null, Maizara, Gunyar, Bakhta, Bogarcham, Kanday etc. Due to the fertile soil thana is the producer of different vegetables and fruits 2.[2] It exports many important vegetables and fruits to other part of khyber pakhtoonkhwa and Pakistan. The important vegetables include tomato, matar (pea), and fruits include plum, apricot, persimon, and peach.
