Thakurpukur Mahestala (community development block) (Bengali: ঠাকুরপুকুর মহেশতলা সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Alipore Sadar subdivision of South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Thakurpukur, Mahestala and Bishnupur police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Biren Roy Road (East), Behala. Chata Kalikapur is an urban areas in this block.[1][2]

Geography

Rasapunja, a constituent panchayat of Thakurpukur Mahestala block, is located at 22°26′03″N 88°17′03″E / 22.4341962°N 88.2840729°E.

Thakurpukur Mahestala community development block has an area of 53.93  km2.[2]

Gram panchayats of Thakurpukur Mahestala block/panchayat samiti are: Ashuti I, Ashuti II, Chatra, Joka I, Joka II and Rasapunja.[3]

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Thakurpukur Mahestala block had a total population of 136,866, out of which 70,420 were males and 66,446 were females. Thakurpukur Mahestala block registered a population growth of 35.09 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for South 24 Parganas district was 20.89 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[4]

Scheduled castes at 53,669 formed around one-third the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 2,324.[5]

Literacy

As per 2001 census, Thakurpukur Mahestala block had a total literacy of 74.78 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 81.95 per cent female literacy was 67.14 per cent. South 24 Parganas district had a total literacy of 69.45 per cent, male literacy being 79.19 per cent and female literacy being 59.01 per cent.[6]
