Thakurganj is a town and a notified area in Kishanganj district in the Indian state of Bihar.Thakurganj is the second largest tehsil after Bahadurganj in Kishanganj district. It has attracted many industry companies. Few of them are tea-factory and brickmaking industries.
Geography
Thakurganj is located at 26°27′N 88°08′E / 26.45°N 88.13°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 82 metres (269 feet). It touches Nepal, West Bengal, Araria, Kishanganj and Bahadurganj borders. Thakurganj is well connected to Nepal and a bridge is going to build between both countries with the help of Govt of India. Siliguri is the main market for every business in Thakurganj. The border village is Hathiduba which touches Nepal border as well as West Bengal border. SH12 connects Araria and Thakurganj. There are 06 (Six) police stations available in Thakurganj block named as Galgalia, Kurlikot, Thakurganj, Pathamari, Kadogaon, Powakhali apart from SSB Units boardering Nepal.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Thakurganj had a population of 15,288. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Thakurganj has an average literacy rate of 60%, little bit higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 63%, and female literacy is 44%. In Thakurganj, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age. Recently Central Government and Nepal Government signed an agreement to make a bridge on the river "Mechi River", which divides India and Nepal. Experts expect to complete by 2014. It will boost the trade system of both countries and the businesses.
Transport
Thakurganj railway station is a major railway station which lies on the Katihar-Siliguri Line. The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport, which is 40 km away from Tharkurganj. Siliguri and Kishanganj are approximately 40 km away from where one can find trains for all major cities of India.
