Thakkar

Thakkar, Thakker,Thacker or Thakrar, thakkar is a Lohana surname found primarily in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Most of Gujarati Thakkars worship 'Jalaram Bapa', and other Hindu Gods. They greet each other with saying 'Jai Jalaram', or 'Jai Sri Krishna'.

Gujarati Thakkars are traditionally a business community. They are famous for their snack, Khaman. Many shops operate under the name of 'Thakkar ni Khaman' (literally : Khaman of Thakkars).

Thakkar's are also found in the Northern India having origin of Punjab and nearby regions. They don't have any direct relation with Gujarat or being Gujarati. These Punjabi Thakkars are comparatively very low in numbers as compared to Gujarati Thakkars.

Thakkar is the most Common Surname of Lohanas. Gujarati Lohanas use the surname 'Thakkar'. The history of 'Thakkar' is the history of 'Lohana'. Lohanas are "Vaishya" Since "vaishya" were Umavanshi, naturally Lohanas are also 'umavanshi'. Going deep in the history of Lohanas would mean going deep in the history of nagvanshi and umavanshi. Most of it is in the form of legend. However, some modern day Thakkars/Lohanas consider themselves to be 'Vaishyas' while some believe themselves to be 'MADARCHOD' and hence it is still a mythical and a debatable topic.

Lohana is short form of Lohar Ranas because as per the recorded history Lohanas ruled over Kashmir from AD 1003 to 1338. It has been recorded as Lohar dynasty-I and Lohar dynasty-II and subsequently rulers from the same clan up to 1338, after which there were mass conversions to Islam. Many Lohanas migrated under compulsion to Sindh, Kutch and Gujarat and today they are known as Sindhi-Lohanas, Kutchi - Lohanas, Parkar-Lohanas, Gujarati - Lohanas, Halai-Lohanas, Depalas and Goghari-Lohanas. Those who resisted the conversions and/or migrations, were killed and there was mass holocaust as recorded in Kashmir history.
