Tender Loving Empire (sometimes abbreviated as TLE) is an independent record label and retail consignment store based in Portland, Oregon.[1] The record label began in 2005 and the first Tender Loving Empire store opened in June 2007 in Northwest Portland. In May 2010, the store was moved to SW 10th Avenue, and in November 2014 a second location was opened on SE Hawthorne.[2][3]
Record Label
Founded in 2005, Tender Loving Empire has over 30 releases. The label was born in the basement of Jared and Brianne Mees's Portland home.[1] In 2007, when the Tender Loving Empire store opened, the label set up shop there. Since 2014, the label has been operated out of the TLE headquarters in downtown Portland.[4]
Tender Loving Empire puts out an annual compilation of local and national music, titled Friends and Friends of Friends. The seventh volume was released in the fall of 2014.[5]
On August 3, 2011 Tender Loving Empire band Typhoon performed on the Late Show with David Letterman.[6]

In 2007 the Tender Loving Empire store opened in NW Portland. In 2010, the store moved to its bigger downtown location, and in 2014 a second location was opened in SE Portland, featuring a larger space, more products, and a more extensive local music section. [3] The store sells handmade goods on consignment, all Tender Loving Empire releases, and has a local music section.[3] The store has a silk-screening studio in the back where they print their own line of t-shirts, totes, cards, and more.[8] The Wall Street Journal has called the store a "dream boutique" and a "creative hub."[9]
