Tekmal is a city, Mandal headquarters and a municipality in Medak District in Telangana, India. It is 140km to the north of Hyderabad.

Geography

Tekmal is town near Jogipet located at 17°58′N 78°02′E / 17.97°N 78.04°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 455 metres (1496 feet).

Demographics

Tekmal has a population of 39,164. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Average literacy rate in Medak District where Tekmal is located is around 54%. In Tekmal, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.s

History

Tekmal is a historic town. It remained a part of various Sultanates and the State of Hyderabad ruled by the Nizam until 1948 when it was absorbed into India.

It has been a centre of learning and culture. The famous Sufi saint Sayyid Sahib Husayni whose tomb is located in the town was one of the great proponents of spreading learning in the region. He built a school called Madrassa-e-Hussainiya, which was considered to be an important institution for producing high quality students in the Hyderabad State. The school has been functioning for the past nearly two centuries.

Among the landmarks in the town is the complex which houses the mausoleums of Sayyid Sahib Husayni and his teacher Hazrat Shah Muhammad Maroof Shahidullah Farooqui Chisti Qadiri and other members of his family and disciples. The presence of this complex has been a great source of development of the cultural heritage of the town.
