Entry to Technical University of Varna

The State University "St. Cyril Slavyanobulgarski" (Bulgarian: Държавния университет „Свети Кирил Славянобългарски“) in the beginning of the 1940s in Varna had two faculties, economics and technology. The predecessor of the Technical University of Varna and MEI-Varna is the Technical Faculty in the State University. Varna had technical traditions in shipbuilding, mechanics, building vehicle bodies and that knowledge and experience made the development of the technical faculty into an institution. In the 1950s, professors and engineers from other technical universities continued their careers here.

In the years of education the main profiles in the department were:

The lecture courses and practical engineering work were taught in the building of State University/University of Economics - Varna. Since 1958 in the Technical faculty in State University "St. Cyril Slavyanobulgarski" there were 30 departments in different technical fields.

Mechanical-Electrical Engeneering Institute

By order of the Bulgarian Socialist Party in 1962 in Varna was founded a Mechanical-Electrical Engeneering Institute (MEI-Varna) (Bulgarian: Машинно-електротехнически институт (МЕИ-Варна). This institute is the first of its specialization in North Bulgaria. In the first academic year the institution does not have a faculty structure. Founder of the institute was Prof. Marin Oprev (expert in steam engines, and steam and gas turbines). Prof.Oprev is the first rector of the University, who gave one stable beginning for the institute and established it as a factor in the region. In 1962 were categorized seven profiles in the Mechanical-Electrical Institute:

In the first academic year 1963/1964 there were 554 students. The profile "Shipbuilding" was the only place for specialized engineers. Georgi Ivanov was appointed first assistant in the Institute after its creation. The laboratories in the institute were supported by the engineering community in the region and a few factories from North Bulgaria. Professors from Mechanical-Electrical Institute Sofia and University of Ruse lectured in Mechanical-Electrical Institute Varna.

Higher Mechanical-Electrical Engeneering Institute

Higher Mechanical-Electrical Engeneering Institute (HMEI-Varna) (Bulgarian: Висш машинно-електротехнически институт (ВМЕИ-Варна)) that is the name of the University after few years work in the area of Machine technologeis, Shipbuilding and Marine technologies, Electrics and Communications. In 1968 the first building of the university (now the Electric faculty) was completed. To 1971 the rectorate and all main functions were administered from this building. In 1971 the second main building was built - the building of Machine and Shipbuilding faculty (today the rectorate). In 1967 Petar Penchev was chosen as Rector of the University.

Departments in the beginning of the 1970s:

In the two terms of his management HMEI-Varna turns from a regional to a national technical institute. In 1975 were finished the building of the Learning-Production building, where had a rooms for producing different type of electric and mechanic ware. In 1987 were opened the building of Computer science`s building ("Hot connection") (In Bulgarian:Топла връзка). In 1991 Senior Mechanical-Electrical Institute in Varna had 6 faculties:"Machine", "Machine-technology", "Shipbuilding", "Electric", "Computing", "Legal" and "Automation." In 1992 a new building open doors-the building of Learning housing (On Bulgarian:Учебнен корпус).The department "Computer technology and science" were founded the same year. This profile became the first Bulgarian representative in the International Organization of Computer Science (UPE).

Technical University of Varna (Bulgarian: Технически университет Варна) has been the official name since 1995. The university started new relationships with universities from Greece, Belgium and other countries. In 1996 the sport complex on the campus was reconstructed. In 1997 the building of New Learning Housing(Нов Учебен Корпус) one of the biggest buildings in the campus opened its doors. After 1997 new profiles were found in the university:

In 2002 40 years from the foundation of the University were celebrated. Meet-Marind congress was held where were presented reports of participants from 27 countries. In the same year the university had a team in the Shell Eco-marathon. In 2011 a new modern ship simulation simulator was opened. In 2012 Technical University of Varna celebrated fifty years. For all this year over 35,000 engineers finished their higher education in the university.
