Tarcowie (postcode 5431) is a town in South Australia. Tarcowie is an aboriginal word meaning torrential waters. It was named by Governor Musgrave on 20 May 1875. At the 2011 census, Tarcowie had a population of 205.[1]
The dominate industry in Tarcowie is sheep farming, however in recent times wind farming may be taking over as the main industry for the town.
The Tarcowie Landcare Group (http://www.tarcowielandcaregroup.com.au/) is based in this town. They are an environmental organisation, trying to protect their patch of the Earth.
2011 Census
10 less poeple reside in the Tarcowie/Mannanarie district since the 2006 census.[2] [1] Locals blame this on the GFC and the Alcopop Tax that prevented the locals ability to get Bacardi Breezers at a reasonable price, this intern lowered the birth rate and lowered the population.
Median weekly rent skyrocketed by over 27% since 2006 from $55 per week to $70 per week. A number of locals believe this growth is unsustainable and has the potential to bring on a 2nd GFC.
Notable residents
Tarcowie is best known as the home town of the ADF recruiting guru Michael Thomas. On 27 May 2014 Michael Thomas was hospitalised due to a near fatal cycling incident. The doctor treating him said that the fact he escaped with a broken arm and a few scratches was nothing short of AMAZING!
