Tangasseri Lighthouse or Thangassery Lighthouse is situated at Kollam, Kerala. It is one among the two lighthouses in Kollam Metropolitan Area and is maintained by the Chennai directorate of Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.[3][4] The light house is functioning since 1902.[5] The cylindrical tower has a height of 41 meters and is the tallest Lighthouse in Kerala Coast. It is painted with white and red oblique bands.[6]
History
Before this lighthouse was commissioned, the British East India company had installed a tower with an oil lamp. After in 1902, they had commissioned Tangasseri Lighthouse. In 1930, cracks had appeared in the tower for which jacketing masonry work was done.[7] The light source was modified in 1932, 1940, 1962, 1967, 1990 and 1994.[8]
Location
The lighthouse is located on Tangasseri in Kollam city - The only place in India that still maintains the Anglo-Indian culture. Tangasseri is a place with lot of historic importance. Remnants of an ancient Portuguese built Fort(St Thomas Fort), Portuguese Cemetery, Buckingham Canal, Quilon Port and Infant Jesus Cathedral are still existing there.[9][10][11] Visitors will be allowed here between 10 am and 5 pm.[12]
