Terminal 1

Tampere–Pirkkala Airport (IATA: TMP, ICAO: EFTP) is located in Pirkkala, 7 NM (13 km; 8.1 mi) south-west[1] of Tampere city centre. The airport is the fourth busiest airport in Finland, as measured by the number of passengers (617,713 in 2010), and the second busiest airport in Finland, as measured by the number of international passengers (526,401 in 2010).[2]

The airport is also home to the Satakunta Air Command base of the Finnish Air Force. F-18 Hornets were stationed at Tampere-Pirkkala airport until summer of 2014 when 21st flight of the Satakunta Air command was dissolved.

History

Tampere Airport was founded in 1936 in Härmälä (a district in Tampere) located some 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the centre of Tampere. At that time Härmälä airport was connected to Helsinki, Vaasa, Oulu and Kemi by Aero O/Y (now Finnair). The first terminal building was built in 1941.

Karhumäki Airways began to fly to Stockholm in the 1950s. The runway wasn't paved until 1958. Between 1936 and 1979 Härmälä airport served 1.5 million passengers. In 1979 Härmälä airport was closed and the new airport opened in Pirkkala. Ryanair started flights to Tampere–Pirkkala in April 2003.

Tampere–Pirkkala was one of Finland's fastest growing airports, having increased its annual passenger numbers from 256,380 in 2000 to 632,010 in 2006. Most of this growth can be attributed to Ryanair's low cost flights to and from a number of destinations in Central and Western Europe.

airBaltic operated to Tampere-Pirkkala from October 2008 to October 2013 and Wizz Air in summers 2010 and 2011.

Terminal 2 was closed for expansion and renovation in May 2014[3] and all airlines will be flying to and from Terminal 1 until the work is complete. It has been announced that Terminal 2 will reopen in April 2015[4] with new baggage carousel and customs and border guard areas.

It was announced on the 13/4/2015 that Ryanair cancels all routes from Tampere for winter season 2015/2016 due to plane shortage

Ground transportation

The airport is connected to the city centres of Pirkkala (8 minutes) and Tampere (30 minutes) by bus route 1L, which runs once per hour.[8] The bus fare for a single ticket is 2,60 €[9] and one can change to any other bus going anywhere within Tampere or Pirkkala for one hour from purchase of ticket. The buses on bus route 1L show the text "1 Pirkkala Lentoasema/Airport" in front. The marking 1L is used only in timetables, not on the buses themselves.

There is also a Ryanair affiliated link connecting the terminal that Ryanair flies to with the railway station. The bus fare on this line is 6 €.

There are long distance connections to Helsinki and other cities via the Tampere coach station . The timetables can be found at the Matkahuolto web site.

Taxi service is also available in front of Terminal 1.
