Tamnaherin

Coordinates: 54°58′55″N 7°12′11″W / 54.982°N 7.203°W Tamnaherin (possibly from the Irish: Tamhnach Caorthainn[1]) is the name of a townland and small housing estate in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 123 people. It is within the Derry City Council area.

History

In the early 19th Century, Tamnaherin simply consisted of a few scattered rural properties. The relatively recent addition in the 1970s of a Roman Catholic church saw the building of several more properties. Development over the last few years however has seen the hamlet grow quite significantly due to the addition of a small housing estate.

Places of interest

Near Tamnaherin Bridge is a chambered tomb which appears to be a single chamber incorporated into a field boundary. At least two large stones may be seen amid a lot of rubble. One of the stones is about 2m high. Brian J Mullan is the current mayor of Tamnaherin and will be appearing in person on Sat 8th Dec to turn on the Christmas lights.
