Taiwan Railways EMU800 series

The EMU800 is a series of electric multiple unit train used by the Taiwan Railways Administration.

Introduction

EMU800 series is purchased in demand of more passengers and branch lines. It serves as the local trains or local express. The number of units is 296 cars and it is secondly large order by TRA. The first two EMU800 trains were built by Nippon Sharyo. At the beginning there was a dispute for the brake system. [1] After years of negotiation, TRA accepted the proposal and the EMU800 began to service. The other 35 trains are built by TRSC during 2013 to 2015. [2] The maximum speed of EMU800 is up to 130 kph which is higher than all the other EMU trains. [3] [4]

Feature

The shape of EMU800 series is much more streamline than all the other EMU series. A yellow bow is painted on the front and it has a nickname "Smiling train". And it is able to carry bikes at its first unit and the last unit. Each unit has two passengers information displayers. The EMU800 aims at replacing old EMU and Chu-Kuang Express, which is anticipated to improve the quality of commuter services. [5]

Service

EMU800 begins its operation in 2014 January at Hsinchu and Chiayi.
