South Korean pop duo TVXQ, known as Tohoshinki (東方神起 Tōhōshinki) in Japanese releases, have released 65 official singles, 15 unofficial promotional singles, 12 featured appearances, and 30 soundtrack appearances. TVXQ originally debuted as a five-piece boy band under S.M. Entertainment in 2003 and released their first single "Hug" in January 2004, which peaked at number four on the Music Industry Association of Korea (MIAK) monthly chart. In November 2004, the band signed with Japan's Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone to release the English version of "Hug" in Japan. In April 2005, TVXQ officially debuted in Japan with the release of "Stay with Me Tonight," which peaked at number 37 on the Oricon Singles Chart. They returned to South Korea in September 2005 to release their second Korean studio album Rising Sun, and the title single "Rising Sun" won Most Popular Music Video at the 2005 Mnet KM Music Festival, solidifying TVXQ's success in South Korea.
In March 2006, TVXQ released their debut Japanese album Heart, Mind and Soul, but the five singles spawned from the album failed to chart in the top ten. In August 2006, TVXQ released their first top ten single "Sky", and in November 2006 they released their first top five single "Miss You / "O"-Sei.Han.Gō." Their first triple A-side single, "Summer Dream / Song for You", released in August 2007, was the band's first Gold certified single in Japan. TVXQ scored their first number-one single in Japan with the release of "Purple Line" in January 2008. The accompanying studio album T debuted at number four on the Oricon Albums Chart and spawned six top five singles. TVXQ's following two singles "Beautiful You / Sennen Koi Uta" and "Dōshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandarō?" both had number-one debuts. The latter also became one of TVXQ's biggest hits in Japan, going two-times Platinum in digital certification.
TVXQ returned to South Korea in September 2008 to release their fourth Korean studio album Mirotic, the band's best-selling album to date. The album's title single "Mirotic" became TVXQ's biggest worldwide hit, peaking at number one in several Asian countries. In 2009, the band scored their best-selling hit in Japan with the release of their 27th single "Share the World / We Are!", which was digitally certified three-times Platinum. The single, released in April, was included in the soundtrack for the anime, One Piece.
After the release of their 28th single "Stand by U" in July 2009, three members of the group–Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun, and Xiah Junsu–attempted to split with their Korean agency, S.M. Entertainment. The band canceled all their activities in Korea, including the production of their fifth Korean album. However, the band continued to release new singles in Japan, and their 29th single "Break Out!", released in January 2010, became TVXQ's first Platinum single. They released their first compilation album Best Selection 2010 in February, which became TVXQ's best-selling and only two-times Platinum certified album in Japan. "Toki o Tomete", the last single TVXQ released as five members, was also certified Platinum.
TVXQ restarted their career as a duo with remaining members U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin in 2011. Their comeback single "Keep Your Head Down" debuted at number five on the Gaon Singles Chart. They signed a recording contracting with Japan's Avex Trax, and released the Japanese version of "Keep Your Head Down", which debuted at number one on the Oricon, reached Platinum, and became the sixteenth best-selling single of the year in Japan. Every single released by the duo since 2011 have peaked on Oricon's top two and were certified Gold.
As of November 2014, TVXQ have sold 4.9 million physical singles in Japan, making them the best-selling international artist of all-time in CD singles.[1]
