Nguyễn Khoa Tóc Tiên (born 13 May 1989), who uses the stage name Tóc Tiên, is a Vietnamese pop singer who currently lives in the United States. She is both an international student and a regular performer on Paris By Night, a Vietnamese-language variety show.[2] She has released four solo albums, two of them before she was 19. Her two best-known songs are "Gió" (wind) and "Đã yêu" (love).[3]
Biography
Toc Tien was born into a rather wealthy family.[4] She has two younger brothers and was referred to by her parents as "Ti."[4] Her mother is a former ballet dancer.[4] From grades one to five, Toc Tien was the highest academic achiever in her class.[4] At age 16, she was the first prize winner of a beauty contest sponsored by Fujifilm.[4] She is named after a type of flower.[2] Her parents were initially determined that she be educated as a doctor.[4] She was told that she may fulfil a singing career on the condition that she perform well at school.[4]
Toc Tien attended Le Hong Phong High School, one of Vietnam's most renowned high schools, but her grades in high school fail miserably as her school schedule conflicted with her singing schedule.[4] Her parents allowed her to date, and she had her first boyfriend when she was in ninth grade.[4] In 2008, she announced that she was dating basketball player Paul Chong, a Vietnamese of Chinese origin.[5] She did not do well on her college entrance exam in Vietnam and failed her first choice university [6] (Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.) In 2009, she moved to California for undergraduate medical studies at Pasadena City College.[2] Although she is generally recognized as a pop star by the Vietnamese students she meets, she does not disclose this status to her American classmates.[7] Three videos that she made in Vietnam during her summer vacation are scheduled for release in September.[8] Initially, she majored in Biology, but later switched to Communications.
The Vietnam News Agency describes Toc Tien as, "well known among local teens" (in Vietnam).[9] VNExpress called her a "singer students love."[10] For the release of My Turn in 2011, she remade her image as more adult and sensual.[11]
