Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (popularly SIMS) is a Business School situated in Range hills, Khadki in Pune city, Maharashtra, India. The institute was established under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ministry of Defence, Government of India and Symbiosis International University in 1993. It offers management education primarily for the dependents of defence personnel of the Indian Defence Services.

SIMS is an ISO 9001:2008 quality certified Institute. It was ranked 23rd nationwide by "Business world" magazine in their 'B-schools' issue of 24 December 2007[1] and 18th in 2008 and 13th by Outlook magazine in Sep 2009[2] It is an accredited "Centre for Corporate Governance" of the 'National Foundation of Corporate Governance'. The institute is one amongst IIM Ahmedabad, JBIMS and SPJIMR in the western region to be an accredited center for Corporate Governance.[3]

History

The Institute was established in 1993, under an MoU between The Ministry of Defence (Government of India) and Symbiosis Group (Now Symbiosis International University) primarily to enable Defence personnel and their dependents pursue Management Education. Its motto is to Be the premier hub of management education for armed forces personnel and their dependents. SIMS offers MBA program, executive and part-time management programs. The flagship MBA program is reserved (90%) for dependants of defence personnel. Other programs are open to all. Till 2011, 16 batches of the flagship MBA program, 2 batches of Executive MBA program, and 3 batches of PGDM Retail banking and sales(Standard Chartered) have passed out.

Campus

The Campus is spread over an area of 4 acres (16,000 m2). It is a fully residential Wifi Campus that provides Holistic learning. The Campus has excellent Sports and Recreation facilities that enable the students to maintain a healthy Lifestyle. The facilities include a Gymnasium, Yoga, Aerobics Center and a swimming pool. The campus is intelligently designed with all the amenities of a contemporary Business School.

The Academic Block houses all the 16 classrooms, a Library, a 450 seater auditorium, Administrative office, Discussion rooms and an IT Laboratory.

SIMS Library

Library

The Institute has an Automated web accessible Library. The main objective of the library is to provide information support for teaching, research, consulting and learning. The total area of the Library is 400 sq. metres.The Library has a collection of more than 18600 books, 110 Journals including 68 foreign journals, 56 magazines (subscriptions) and 3 Newsletters. It also has a collection of a large number of CD's and DVD's. The Institute records all the talks by guest speakers at seminar's, conferences and events at SIMS. The Library is a member of MCCIA, Indian Society for Training & Development, British Library, ASTD, NHRD, IABC, ECCH.

Classrooms

There are a total of 16 classrooms. The well designed classrooms are equipped with multimedia facilities, Projector, networked computers and acoustics providing an all round experience of learning. Each classroom is designed to seat 60 students(maximum).

Computer Laboratory

The Computer Laboratory has 120 workstations that come with LCD screens and modern software packages like SPSS, Prowess, Minitab and ERP Packages. The Laboratory is fully networked and Houses the ICICI Bank Treasury Research Lab.

SIMS Auditorium

Auditorium

Audi, as the students call it, is a fully air conditioned amphitheater with attached green rooms. The Audi can house 450 delegates/students. The auditorium is mainly used for Corporate interactions, Seminars, batch meets, Showcases (Movies and Matches) and Placement presentations.

The Institute has a Basketball Court, Table tennis, Badminton Court, Gymnasium, Aerobics centre, a Swimming pool, a health centre and the newest addition ; A croquet ground.

SCHC houses the Swimming Pool, The state of the art Gymnasium, Aerobics Centre and a Doctor.

Dormitories

Student Dormitories

There are 4 hostel buildings, which can house 600 students at a time. 2 Hostels each for Males and females respectively. There are faculty quarters, which house the Director and a few permanent faculty.

Each Hostel has 4 floors, including a parking at the basement. The basements also have two TT Tables and a garden at the center of the building. The design of the dormitories allows brightness at all time of the day. Each floor has 16 rooms, which have a balcony and two bathrooms per room. The Dormitories are perfectly designed for a comfortable stay for the students.

Guesthouse

The guesthouse in the campus has 8 airconditioned suites that accommodate the corporates and alumni that visit the campus. It is located between the student dormitories and SCHC.

Cafeteria

SIMS cafeteria is a double storied building. It provides messing facilities as well as a canteen. The food served in the cafeteria is carefully designed by the dietician keeping in mind the requirements of the students. Canteen provides snacks and condiments all throughout the day. It also houses a common room which has an LCD TV and a Foosball table.

Programmes

Masters in Business Administration

As per the Memorandum of Understanding between Symbiosis International University and Ministry of Defence, Government of India ; The Admission to the MBA programme is reserved for the dependants of Defence Personnel - 90% and Industry Sponsored/Civilians - 10%. Officers of Armed Forces on Study Leave as authorized by respective Service Headquarters (HQ's) are granted automatic admission subject to meeting eligibility criteria set by the institute every year. Prospective candidates have to appear for Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP), which is conducted every year to qualify for admission into the Institute. The Institute decides the cut-off marks/percentile and the selection process to be followed for prospective students writing the Entrance Exam.

The MBA Programme is the Flagship program of the institute and follows a Major-Minor structure. The institute follows a rigorous academic curriculum that enables a student to experience holistic learning in terms of academic content, industry exposure, case studies and real time management problems.

The Programme is distributed into 4 semesters, Method of Assessment: 100 credits in Four Semesters. Each credit is defined as 15 hours of teaching. Each credit is assessed for 50 marks. Internal assessment is for 60% marks and external assessment is for 40% marks for all external courses. The Institute follows a CGPA system.

The Institute has student exchange programmes with Leeds Metropolitan University[4] and Berlin School of Economics and Law, where final semester students have an option to pursue a semester and obtain a dual MSc degree.

Scholarships - JP Morgan Chase offers scholarships to bright students in the finance specialisation. The scholarships are based on academic performance and a group discussion, presentation and personal interviews.[5]

Summer Internship is an important aspect of the MBA Program. It is an 8 to 12 week exposure to the corporate world, when the students get to work on real processes, problems in the corporate world and get to apply the classroom learning and skillsets to the work given by companies.

Executive Programmes

The executive programmes in Business Management are primarily for the mid level executives & managers - professionals, and are open to all unlike the MBA programme. These programmes offer integrated learning in all major subjects that would enable a working professional to hone his/her skills to climb the corporate ladder.

Duration : 15 months recently changed to 12 months effective June 2015 intake

Eligibility : Graduate with 5 years and above of work experience.

Executive Programmes - Part Time

The executive programmes are designed for mid level managers, with at least 5 years experience. The programme aims to hone the skills of the participants, leading up to an Executive Masters in Business Administration. This course is unique that it has no specialisation and all core branches of management have equal weightage and focus. The programme is specifically targeted at the working professional, by scheduling the contact classes in the evenings of the work week or through contact classes during weekends. The weekday batches have 3 hours of scheduled classes from Monday to Friday from 7 to 10 pm and the weekend classes are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm. The number of hours of contact for both the batches remain the same. The entire course duration is for a period of 30 months. The assessment pattern is a mix of internal assignments and external examinations. The course structure, curriculum and faculty are all top notch and obtained from the industry. The learning for the participants is practical and purpose oriented.

Management Development Programmes

These Programmes are meant for Higher executives of firms to equip themselves with expertise in a particular area of their interest. These Programmes are generally known as general Management Programmes, which are designed with the objective of providing insights into managerial concepts and techniques relevant for formulating and implementing strategies in functional areas. Besides GMPs, the Institute’s MDPs are offered as open enrollment programmes and are designed to address specialized needs in areas such as business policy, communications, economics, finance, marketing, organizational behaviour, personnel and industrial relations etc.

The Student Cells are part of the Student Council, and they assist in the working of various objectives.

Other Student Initiatives

Pranay - A social initiative by SIMS, a Sanskrit word synonymous with love, care and affection is a first of its kind social initiative to be launched by a B-school.[8]

Pranay works closely with NGO’s like Akanksha,[9] Mobile-Crèche, Beauty without Cruelty (BWC), Queen’s Mary Training Institute (QMTI), CRY and MAHER. Pranay organizes events like Medical Camps, Walkathons, Literary fests and blood donation camps. The institute signed a MoU with PMC in 2009 to make Business plans for slum dwellers.[10] As a part of this collaboration, student at SIMS started working with an organization called Pragati that creates employment for women in slum areas.

Placements

Final campus placement process at SIMS starts from November end. The 'Placement Season' is triggered off on Day Zero. Time slots are allocated to organizations to conduct their recruitment process depending upon their previous relationships with the institute and the preferences of the students. "Chair Placements, SIMS" coordinates the schedule.

Summer projects process for selecting junior batch students commences in October. Companies are invited to campus or obtain CVs to short list candidates for summer placements.
