Syed Nasir Ali Rizvi

Born on the 5th of January 1935, Syed Nasir Ali Rizvi (Late) s/o Brig. Gen.(R) Syed Said Ali Rizvi (Retired as G.O.C Bahawalpur), started his education in Govt. High School of Kehror Pacca, continued his studies in Multan Convent, Mayfair School of Calcutta, and finally completed his bachelors from Forman Christian College, Lahore. Following the footsteps of his father, after completing his studies, he joined Pakistan Military Academy, Kakool; but due to unavoidable reasons, resigned from army in 1957 and began his political career in 1958. He started his political career with Maader-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah in her campaign against the dictator Ayub Khan. Got elected as the General Secretary Multan Council, Muslim League in 1965. The only person who contested elections against the group of Nawab of Kalabagh, and got elected as the Member of Multan Divisional Council. (Was the only member on the opposition benches in the Multan Divisional Council.)

In 1968, he joined Quaid-e-Awam Z.A Bhutto ‘s caravan in his campaign against the Ayub Khan, and later played a major role in the forming on Pakistan Peoples’ Party with Z.A Bhutto.

In 1970, he contested the General Elections on PPP’s ticket and won with the heavy lead of 63,000 votes.

In 1971, went to Dhaka with Z.A Bhutto for talks with Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman.

In 1972, he again accompanied Mr. Bhutto to Moscow, for talks with the Russians, and later in the same year became member of Rural Development Board, Telephone and Telegraph Committee, addressed the students of Pennsylvania University, U.S, and also represented Pakistan in the United Nations.

In 1973, he accompanied Mr. Z. A Bhutto to Iran on the invitation of the Shah of Iran. In the same year he also became the member of Sindh TAS Committee.

In the year 1974, Syed Nasir Ali Rizvi (late) became the Secretary General of PPP, Punjab; and headed a delegation to Romania for Romania’s 11th Congress,where he delivered Mr. Bhutto’s message to the Romanian President Chao Chisko. He also became the member of Punjab Small Industries Corporation and the Federal Member of Organizing Committee of PPP, in the same year.

The year 1976, was a very crucial year in the political career of Syed Nasir Ali Rizvi (late), as he became the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of PPP, Pakistan. In the same year he also became the Federal Minister for Housing, Works & Urban Development which led him to play a major role in the development of Pakistan, especially Islamabad which included the Supreme Court Building, the Parliament, the PM House, the Presidency and even played a major role in the construction of the Faisal Mosque; was constructed during his rein of being the Minister for Housing, Works and Urban Development. He went with Mr. Z.A Bhutto for discussions to Korea with the Korean President Kim El Sing, and also to China for talks.

He also represented Pakistan in the Canada Habitat Conference, and presided over the conference. Lead a delegation to Sweden for talks, and later went to England during the Racist Riots and addressed the overseas Pakistanis in England, who admired his presence and address to their community.

In 1977, he contested the general elections again and got elected as the Member of National Assembly once again. After one year, when the assemblies dissolved and marshal law was declared, Mr. Rizvi’s political career came to a voluntary pause for a period of 15 years because he was a man of principles who was always against dictatorship, and so did not want to be a part of it.

In 1993, after all the leftovers of the dictatorship had been cleared, he contested general elections and secured 68,000 votes after 15 years of absolute political absence, but unfortunately lost due to severe rigging, as the results of 55 polling stations have been vanished from the records till date.


He passed away in a car accident on the 5th of February, 2000.
