Predecessor Suzuki APV (Indonesia)

The Suzuki Ertiga, basically meaning R3 in Indonesian, is a seven-seat compact MPV developed by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki and its Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki. It is also built by Changan Suzuki in China. The Ertiga is also sold in Indonesia as Mazda VX-1.

Overview

It was launched on 12 April 2012 in India[2] and on 22 April 2012 in Indonesia.[3] Maruti Suzuki proclaims it to be the first LUV (Life Utility Vehicle). It competes with the Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo, Tata Sumo Grande, Toyota Avanza and Nissan Grand Livina. This car is powered by K-series 1.4 litre petrol engine. A diesel version of this car is powered by Fiat's 1.3 litre Multijet engine. The car is based on extended Suzuki Swift platform. This means that the Ertiga is a monocoque MPV; the first in India. It is also considered to be a cross between a saloon/hatchback and an MPV. It has beaten the long-reigning Toyota Innova. This is said that "ERTIGA" is first "muv in world.

The Ertiga is said to be the production version of the R-III (R3) concept showcased by MSIL at the Indian Automobile Exposition 2010. Moreover the name Ertiga is said be an adaptation of R-Tiga where "Tiga" means "three" in Indonesian. The "R" stands for Rows. Therefore "Ertiga" is derived from "R3" which in turn means "(Swift with) Three Rows".

Markets

Indonesia

Suzuki Ertiga is also rebadged as Mazda VX-1, seen here in Bali.

At the 20th Indonesia International Motor Show, three new concepts in the Ertiga's form are introduced, the Sports, Luxury and Crossover version, which are actually Ertigas heavily modified into concept cars. The normal version, in this case the GX, also appeared.

After the trouble between worker unions at the Maruti Suzuki Plant in India, plans are being made to transfer the building plant to Indonesia, as most of the orders are from that country. The versions of that county's Ertiga is also different. It has five versions, the GA (standard), GL (more equipped than GA), GX (mid-range), Elegant (GX with aerokit and interior luxuries), and Sporty (GX-based limited edition with special body kit, similar to Suzuki Swift Sport). All version comes in 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto, while GA only have manual option. In January 2013, Ertiga with double blower AC was introduced. Though was based from Swift, the second AC blower was placed on the interior platform like other pickup-based MPVs, such as the Toyota Kijang Innova or the Isuzu Panther, unlike another non-pickup-based MPV such as Nissan Grand Livina which its second AC blower was placed in rear console box. On May 2013, Ertiga with automatic transmission was introduced for GL & GX type.

The Suzuki Ertiga sold 109,461 units in two years, with selling record over Toyota Avanza in one year.[4]

India

According to Maruti Suzuki, the Indian Ertiga was designed specifically for Indian consumers,[5][6] unlike the other Maruti models which were designed for the global market. Maruti has marketed it as a "Life Utility Vehiclle".[7] 11,000 of these vehicles were ordered in India within five days.[8][9]

In India, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga[10] MPV is available in both the alternatives of diesel and petrol variants. Though both of these engines were also seen doing duties earlier in various models, but this time they are tweaked and retuned to get more out of them, as now they need to bear more burden due to its stretched platform and provide its consumers with some fitting performance figures.

The petrol-run 1.4L power train is K14B; the advanced K-series motor with variable valve timing (VVT) that weights light resulting in better mileage figures. The power train with 1372cc displacement delivers a peak power of 95 PS at 6000 rpm along with a peak torque of 130 Nm at the rate of 4000 rpm.

On the other hand, is the highly acclaimed 1248cc DDiS, Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) engine, which has already been used by the company in the popular sedan SX4, has got some out the box capabilities to provide remarkable mileage numbers. The maximum power and peak torque figures of the diesel variant are 90 PS at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm at 1750 rev per minute respectively. The petrol and diesel versions of Maruti Ertiga MPV are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, in all models.

In June 2013, Maruti Suzuki added its Ertiga models with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The Ertiga LXi and VXi have original factory converter kit and are provided with i-GPI (intelligent Gas Port Injection) which Maruti Suzuki claimed will achieve 22.8 kilometers of one-liter-premium-equivalent. Previously Maruti Suzuki has CNG models for Alto, Wagon R, Eeco, SX4 and Estilo.[11][12]
