Suzanne "Suzi" Oppenheimer (born December 13, 1934) is a former New York State politician, who served from 1985 to 2013 in the state senate, representing the 36th district from January 1986 until December 2002, and the 37th district from 2003 to 2013. A resident of Mamaroneck, her district was based in Westchester County. Before serving in the state senate she served four terms as mayor of the village of Mamaroneck.[1]
Before her election to the Senate, she served four terms as Mayor of the Village of Mamaroneck, as well as President of the Westchester Municipal Officials Association and President of the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation. Prior to being elected mayor of the village of Mamaroneck, she was President of the Mamaroneck League of Women Voters and President of the PTA of the Central School in Mamaroneck.[1]
She is a staunch supporter of the national and New York teachers union locals, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and United Federation of Teachers (UFT), respectively, and an opponent of charter schools.[2][3]
Education
Oppenheimer, who graduated from The Calhoun School in Manhattan, received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Connecticut College for Women and later earned a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. Upon receiving her degree, she worked on Wall Street as an industry analyst for L.F. Rothschild.[4]
Personal life
She is married to Martin J. Oppenheimer, a partner in the law firm Proskauer Rose; the couple has four children.[4]
2010 elections
On Monday, December 6, 2010, Bob Cohen conceded to Oppenheimer after a lengthy ballot recount.[5]
