Sussex County Community College (SCCC) is an accredited, co-educational, two-year, public, community college located on a 167-acre (68 ha) campus Newton in Sussex County, New Jersey in the United States. The campus is located along County Route 519 between Swartswood Road (County Route 622) and Plotts Road in Newton.
SCCC began operations in 1981 and became fully accredited in 1993 by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.[1] SCCC offers 40 associate degree and 16 post-secondary professional and health science certificate programs available both at traditional classes at its campus, through hybrid and online classes, and through distance learning.[1][2][3][4] Many students who attend SCCC transfer to pursue the completion of their undergraduate college education at a four-year college or university. The college also offers programs for advanced high school students, community education courses, and programs in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.[5] As of 2012, SCCC reported an enrollment of 3,403 students of which 56% attend full-time and 44% attended part-time.[2] The SCCC campus was formerly the site of Don Bosco College, a Roman Catholic seminary operated by the Salesian Order from 1928 until it was closed in the early 1980s and its 179-acre campus sold to the Sussex County government on 22 June 1989 for US$4,209,800.[6][7]
Course Delivery System
SCCC offers traditional classes as well as hybrid and online classes, as well as programs for high school students and Community Education and Workforce Development.
Instructional Facilities
The college has 38 classrooms, 9 health science classrooms and labs, 12 computer labs, and 5 science labs, as well as 4 art studios, a dark room, and a graphics lab. The campus is home to the Performing Arts Center, as well as a Student Center Theater, Business Learning Center, broadcasting studio, Entrepreneurial Center, and gymnasium.[8]
Financial Aid & Scholarships
In the 2010/2011 year, $9,609,656 was awarded to 2,495 students. 47% of students received some form of aid. Over $100,000 worth of scholarships were awarded to more than 200 students in the 2010/2011 school year.[9]
Extracurricular activities
The college also has National Junior College Athletic Association intercollegiate athletics, offering Women's and Men's Soccer in the fall, Men's and Women's Basketball in the winter and spring and Men's Baseball and Women's Softball in the spring. The Athletic Director is John Kuntz.
The college also offers many clubs and activities for students.
