Surface is an American design, architecture, and fashion magazine. Created in 1993 by Richard Klein, Surface was based in San Francisco until 2005, when the main offices moved to New York City. The magazine is published 10 times a year.[1] In 1994, Vanity Fair named Surface as one of ten "upstart magazines to watch". Of these ten, only Surface and Visionaire still remained in production 10 years later.[2]

Avant Guardian issue

The magazine is popular for its November Avant Guardian issue, in which thousands of applicants in the field of emerging photography compete to be a part of the "Avant Guardian Portfolio", as the Avant Guardian is recognized for its ability to launch careers in fashion photography. According to Klein, the Avant Guardian Awards have become better known than the magazine. Past Avant Guardians frequently appear in the pages of Surface and have gone on to shoot campaigns and promotions for Giorgio Armani, Hermès, Banana Republic, Nike, IBM and Levi's—as well as magazines like Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and The New York Times Magazine. Past Avant Guardians include Nicholas Duers, Clang, KT Auleta, Sarah Silver, Josh Jordan, Mark Veltman, and Vanina Sorrenti.
