Sumo Cyco is an independent female fronted punk metal based band in Toronto, Canada. The band launched in March 2011 and has released nine songs and nine official music videos.
Biography
Sumo Cyco is an independent female fronted punk metal based band in Toronto, Canada whose current members are: Sever (formerly solo artist: Skye Sweetnam), Matt 'MD' Drake on lead guitar (Dodger), Ken 'THOR' Corke on bass guitar (Skye Sweetnam, Kazzer, Red Light King) and Andy 'THE WOLF' Joseph on drums (Jojeto).
2011-2013: Formation
They launched as a band in March 2011 and had their first show opening for Hollywood Undead to a crowd of a thousand.[1] Sumo Cyco has also shared a stage with Finger Eleven, The Salads and Raggadeath with Miche Mee. They have songs mixed by Jag Tanna (I Mother Earth), Julius “Juice” Butty (Alexisonfire) and Matt DeMatteo (Big Wreck) amongst others. One song, "Interceptor” was featured on YouTuber Ray William Johnson's channel with over 5 million views. Sumo Cyco has a strong presence online, and direct both their own music videos and promotional films. Sumo Cyco mixes influences from the likes of System of a Down, Rob Zombie, and No Doubt. Musically, their sound blends heavy metal guitars, blast beats, and dance hall rhythms.
The band won Best Female Fronted Band at the Toronto Independent Music Awards 2012.[2] The band won Indie Week Toronto Oct 20th 2013 and attended Indie Week Ireland in Limerick in April 2014.[3]
The band has seven singles and matching music videos to their name, “MERCY”, takes place in a bright, asylum-like, creepy cartoon prison, “LIMP” a zombie movie with a twist, “Interceptor” a clown murder mystery, “Danger” an alien experiment gone hard rock, “Who Do You Want To Be” a day in the life of a girl with a TV for a head, and "Where Do We Go?" which features Sever and friends in a haunted house. The videos have gained hundreds of thousands of views, despite being made on a shoestring budget. All were directed and produced by the band.
2014-Present: Touring & Lost in Cyco City
In October, 2013 the band won Indie Week Toronto and attended Indie Week Ireland in April of 2014. Using the opportunity of being over seas the band set up their first international tour, "Lost In Ireland & The UK" To promote their material to the international market. The toured various cities across Ireland, Scotland and England.
On June 10th, 2014 the band released their first album, "Lost in Cyco City".
The band currently has plans to return to the UK and visit various countries in Europe (including Italy, Austria, and Slovakia) on their No Mercy tour, which will take place in mid to late April.
On March 10th, 2015 the band announced that they have signed with TKO / The Kirby Organization Booking Agency for worldwide representation. TKO are known for booking elite Hard Rock and Metal acts such as Motorhead, Anthrax (American band), Sevendust plus many more. TKO president Andrew Goodfriend was quoted as saying 'TKO are very excited to be working with SUMO CYCO. They have great vision and their music is incredible for such a young band. We are really looking forward to helping them get to the next level."
