Sumant Sinha (born February, 1965[1]) is an Indian businessman. In 2010 he founded investment banking and consulting firm Savant Advisors and in 2011 founded independent power producer ReNew Power, headquartered in Gurgaon,.[2] India, for which he serves as CEO. He is currently the Co-Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) committee on National Renewable Energy as well as the Chairman of the Indian Wind Energy Association (IWEA), the apex body for wind energy industry in India, and a founder member of the Solar Power Developers’ Association.[3] In the past, Sumant served as the Chairman at the National Retail Committee of CII and was on the SIPA Advisory Board at Columbia University. He is also a Member of Board of Advisors at the Conference Board, India.[4]

Education

Sumant received his education from IIT Delhi, where he received a Bachelor of Technology, IIM Calcutta, where he received a Master of Business Administration, and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, where he received a Master's degree in public policy.[5][6][7] Sumant was a National Talent Search Examination(NTSE) scholar, a Dean's Fellow at Columbia University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst(CFA) charter holder.[8]

Career

After completing his education, Sinha started his career as an investment banker, working in the United States and then the United Kingdom with Citibank and ING Barings.[9] In 2002, he became CFO of the Aditya Birla Group in India, a role he retained until 2007.[5][6] During that time, he founded and served as CEO of Aditya Birla Retail. In 2008, he became the COO of wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy and headed the global operations of the company. He helped Suzlon refinance its outstanding debt of $3 billion.[10] Shortly after his departure from Suzlon in 2010, he founded investment banking and consulting firm Savant Advisors.[11] Early the following year, he founded ReNew Power, an Independent Power Producer(IPP) of clean energy.[5][12][13]

He has spoken on global platforms and has authored many articles on subjects related to entrepreneurship, India’s economic scenario and the issues related to climate change in leading publications such as The Economic Times and Business Standard.[14] He has also been quoted in leading international dailies such as The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal.[15]

Personal life

Sinha is the son of Yashwant Sinha a former finance minister of India.[1][5] He is the brother of Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha.[5] He is married to Vaishali Sinha, who is a Director at ReNew Power[16] and is also the Founder CEO of iCharity, a non-profit online platform which brings together those who want to give and those who are committed to working in the social sector.[17]
