Sudbury railway station is a railway station serving the town of Sudbury in Suffolk, England. It is the single-platform northern terminus of the Gainsborough Line, and is managed by Abellio Greater Anglia, who provide all train services. The station is located on the edge of the town centre.
The current station is the third one in Sudbury. The first was built in 1849, which was replaced in 1865 when the line was extended to Cambridge to form the Stour Valley Railway. However, the station became a terminus again following the Beeching cuts in 1967 following closure of the line to Cambridge. In 1991 the station was re-sited to make way for the construction of the Kingfisher Leisure Centre.[1]
The unstaffed station is looked after voluntarily by Sudbury in Bloom[2] and is annually entered into the Anglia in Bloom station competition, where it has won the Silver Gilt award in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The station also won the Best Station Garden award at the 2008 ACoRP Community Rail Awards.[3]
A self-service ticket machine has been provided adjacent to the platform entrance.
