Stuart Myall (born 12 November 1974) is a former English football defender. He began his career in the Football League at Brighton & Hove Albion and after an unsuccessful spell at Brentford, he dropped into non-league football.

Playing career

Early life

Myall grew up in Eastbourne, East Sussex and was head boy at Cavendish School in the town.[1]

Brighton & Hove Albion

Born in Eastbourne, Myall joined the Brighton & Hove Albion's Centre Of Excellence at age 11.[2] He made his debut for the club during the 1992/93 season[2] and made seven Division Two appearances. He signed his first professional contract in April 1993.[1] He gradually broke through into the first team, making 13 league appearances during the 1993/94 season and 27 in 1994/95, scoring his first two Brighton goals during the latter campaign. In the 1995/96 season, Myall made 33 league appearances and scored two goals. Myall was released by manager Jimmy Case at the end of the season,[1] after the club's relegation to Division Three was confirmed. During his time at the Goldstone Ground, Myall made 93 appearances and scored four goals.[3] In 2002, Myall recalled that he "had a great time at Brighton. It was what I always wanted to do and I was at the Albion from a very young age. I had a really fantastic time and I was disappointed when I was released in 1996 because I had played quite a few games for the club. But we got relegated and Jimmy Case wanted to bring in his own players".[1]

Brentford

Myall signed for Division Two side Brentford on a free transfer during the summer of 1996.[4] He failed to make even the substitutes' bench during the 1996/97 season under manager David Webb and instead turned out for the club's reserve side,[5] which finished third in the Capital League. Under new manager Eddie May for the 1997/98 season, Myall had to wait until 1 November 1997 to make his debut, with a starting appearance in a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth.[3] Myall started the following game against Carlisle United, but was substituted at half time for Ryan Denys in a 1-0 defeat.[3] Following May's sacking and the appointment of Micky Adams, Myall was an unused substitute for a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City on 8 November. Myall never featured in a first team squad again and (along with Simon Spencer, Tamer Fernandes and Joe Omigie) departed the club in January 1998, having negotiated a settlement on his contract.[6]

Hastings United

Myall signed for Southern League Premier Division side Hastings Town prior to the start of the 1998/99 season. The club resigned from the Southern League in 1999 after a fifth-place finish, but were reinstated to the Southern League Division One East for the 1999/00 season. Myall won the first silverware of his career during the 2001/02 season, helping Hastings to the Southern League Division One East title. Myall suffered an injury hit 2002/03 season, being sidelined with a persistent knee injury[7] and his woes were compounded by the club (now renamed Hastings United) being relegated straight back to the Southern League Division One East. He made 13 appearances and scored three goals during the 2002/03 season.[8] Myall left Hastings in February 2004[9] after making 18 appearances and scoring four goals during the 2003/04 season.[10] Myall made over 200 appearances during his time with the Arrows.[2]

Eastbourne Borough

Myall signed for Southern League Premier Division side Eastbourne Borough in February 2004 and made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Merthyr Tydfil.[9] He made eight appearances in what remained of the 2003/04 season.[10] Despite an 11th-place finish, Eastbourne were elevated to the new Conference South for the 2004/05 season, though Myall would depart the club in February 2005.[11] He made only nine appearances during the 2004/05 season.[12]

Folkestone Invicta

Myall transferred to Isthmian League Premier Division side Folkestone Invicta on 12 February 2005.[11] He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Yeading on 19 March, starting the match and playing the full 90 minutes.[13] Myall scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 victory over Slough Town on 21 April.[14] He made nine appearances and scored one goal during what remained of the 2004/05 season.[12] Myall scored his first goal of the 2005/06 season on 17 September 2005, putting Folkestone 1-0 up in a league match versus Hampton & Richmond Borough, before the Seasiders conceded three second half goals to lose 3-1.[15] He scored his second goal of the season with the winner over AFC Wimbledon on 7 January 2006.[16] Myall was a virtual ever-present during the 2005/06 season and made 40 appearances, scoring two goals.[17] Myall also played a part in the Seasiders' run to the first round proper of the 2005/06 FA Cup, which ended in a 2-1 defeat to League Two side Chester City.[18] Myall made six appearances during the early part of the 2006/07 season, before leaving the club in September.[19] He made 55 league appearances and scored three goals during his time with the Seasiders.

Horsham

Myall signed for Isthmian League Premier Division side Horsham in September 2006. He made his debut in a 3-1 win over Leyton on 23 September.[20] He scored his first goal for the club with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Margate on 27 March 2007. Myall made 30 appearances and scored one goal during the 2006/07 season.[19] Myall was part of the club's historic run to the second round of the 2007/08 FA Cup, playing in the 4-1 first round win over Conference South side Maidenhead United[21] and taking League One side Swansea City to a replay in the second round, which was lost 6-2 at the Liberty Stadium.[22] Myall left Horsham at the end of the 2007/08 season,[23] after making 30 appearances over the course of the campaign. He made 60 appearances and scored one goal during his time with the Hornets.

Eastbourne United Association

Myall signed for Sussex County League Division Two side Eastbourne United Association in December 2012.[2] He made his debut as a substitute in a 3-2 victory over Seaford Town on December 8.[24][25]

Coaching career

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Myall spent time in the United States, coaching children in Atlanta and Chicago.[1]

Personal life

During a Q&A for a Brentford matchday programme in September 1997, Myall revealed he supported Liverpool as a boy.[26] Myall worked office jobs in the early 2000s, but was inspired to become a PE teacher and enrolled on a course at Brighton University in 2002.[1] He emigrated to Kuala Lumpur in 2013.
