Streight Angular are a band from Boston, Massachusetts, currently signed to Polk Records.[1] The band has garnered significant accolades from local press, including nominations as New Artist of the Year by The Boston Music Awards[2] and Best New Act by The Boston Phoenix.[3] The Boston Phoenix also named Streight Angular Garage Band of the Year in their 2012 Best Music Poll[4] and nominated the song Everyone is Syncopated for Song of the Year.[5]

Overview

Streight Angular was founded by Yoshi Walsh (aka Al Polk) and Theresa Polk when they met at party.[6][7] The two later met Andrew Mellow while he played in the band Coalmine Canary and recruited him to play bass,[8][9] rounding out the current lineup. The band previously included additional instrumentation, including Adam Strock on guitar, Michell Barys on trumpet,[10] and Noel Vickery on bass,[11] but has settled into a more traditional rock trio arrangement.

The origin of the band's name was described by Al Polk in an interview with ROQ Magazine:

I was walking to work at my regular 9 to 5 job, and I realized that a lot of things were Straight and Angular in the world. Not necessarily in shapes but also in emotions, feelings, and the way that people act. Some people are very straight in their lives, they don’t take any risks or anything like that and some people get a little bit more angular. I felt like I wanted to be a little bit of both, go a little crazy, and do whatever. Just trying to find some meaning of what’s going on in this time and place right now.[12]
