Stoyan Ormandzhiev (Bulgarian: Стоян Орманджиев), (10 January 1920 – 10 October 2006) was a Bulgarian footballer and manager, who managed two European clubs and the Bulgaria national team during his career.

Playing career

He made his professional debut at the age of 16 while he played for the local Radetski Varna(now PFC Spartak Varna). Later he played three years for Vladislav Varna(now PFC Cherno More Varna). The most successful period in his career cames when he joins Lokomotiv Sofia. During his stay at Lokomotiv he won the Bulgarian Championship in 1945 and Bulgarian Cup twice – in 1945 and 1948. He has played 20 games for the Bulgarian national football team, as in 5 of them he is the team captain. In 1948 he won 2nd place in the poll for Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award. Because of health issues at the age of 29 he decided to retire from football. He is one of the legends of Lokomotiv Sofia.

Managerial career

In 1948 he obtained coaching qualification in USSR. When he returns in Bulgaria in 1950, he was appointed as national team manager. He managed the team nearly a decade, under his charge in 1956 the team won the Bronze medals in the Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He holds the record of 76 games in charge of the team.

He was head coach of CSKA Sofia in the period 1965–1970. He crowned the team with 2 championship and 2 cup titles during his lead. In 1967 he leads the team to semi-final in European Champion Clubs' Cup (UEFA Champions League) against the Italian Internazionale. This is one of the best club achievements ever.

In 23 January 1977 he was in charge of Bulgaria national football team for last time, when they lost to Brazil 2–1 in São Paulo.

In 1979 he became head coach of the Austrian football club Alpine Donawitz (now DSV Leoben), but he stayed in charge for only a year.

Style of play

He was remarkable with his jumping and heading abilities as well with his sportsman behavior on the pitch.
