Steven C. Englebright (born August 24, 1946)[1] represents District 4 in the New York State Assembly, which comprises several areas of Suffolk County Long Island and the North Shore, including Port Jefferson Station, parts of Coram, Centereach, Selden and Lake Grove. He is a Democrat. He was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992. He is currently the chair of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation.[3]

Education and career

Englebright graduated from Bayside High School in Queens, New York. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969 and an M.S. in Paleontology/Sedimentology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1974. He worked as Curator of Geologic Collections at SUNY/Stony Brook and was the founding director of the Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences. Englebright served as a Suffolk County legislator from 1983 until his election to the New York State Assembly in 1992.[1][2]

Personal life

Englebright has lived in Setauket, New York since 1973. He has two daughters, Christina Marie and Jennifer Lynn.[2]

West Meadow Beach

In 1996, Englebright took measures to authorize the demolition of 90 bungalows along West Meadow Beach in an effort to preserve green space in his assembly district. A court ruling in 1979 deemed that they were built on public land. After much heated debate, petitioning, and picketing, the cottages were condemned and demolished in 2004. The cottages had been recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but state-mandated demolition orders took precedence.
